I wish for all a wonderful holiday weekend and encourage each to take a moment to reflect about what this weekend represents

It often results in family time, white sales, etc. however this is what most do not not why we able to do so.

'Attended our local "Sea to Ski" festival parade today (it happened to fall on memorial Day weekend this year). One of the first entries was a small group of vets. Leading them was one vet carrying the Stars & Stripes high aloft, another a POW/MIA flag, and between them a third carrying a hand made sign honoring POW's/MIAs with the simple statement, "Never forgotten".

And in this flaming, screaming, left wing liberal, mostly anti-military college town, THEY RECEIVED A CONTINUAL STANDING OVATION AS FAR DOWN THE PARADE ROUTE AS I COULD SEE. :usa

Seeing that was THEE highlight of the parade...

Thank you for sharing and as wonderful as I am certain the support was for me sadness is ever present because by tomorrow most will have forgotten and then proceed to live another 364 days as if what we/they have is a matter of fact or better put; our right of passage.

Bill,
Having read your note after holding my own personal and private raising and lowering of the flag today, you stated quite clearly what is in our thoughts and hearts.
Thank you

I know I've put it out here before, but my younger boy is in Iraq with the 1st Infantry, 2nd Brigade, Bravo Company and they are working with a new battalion, training them to take over their sector. Really tough times there, and all the prayers they can receive from us are so critical for their success.
The new guys are really having a tought time getting acclimated, so please say a prayer for them as well.
God Bless.

I have given this weekend and this Forum much thought and certainly when I presented the thread I without thinking about it was referencing the USA however this Forum and the members are from all over the world and regardless of where you reside taking a few minutes to reflect on what it means to have and do what you do regardless of where you live is IMO is important.

There is no doubt that I wave red, white, blue and yet IMO it is just as important for us to remember that an island unto ourselves we are not.

I also want to wish all of our International friends nothing but the best too.

Well said Bill.

As a veteran, my biggest pet peeve about Memorial Day and Veteran's Day is that people forget what they are about, or get them mixed up.

I am amazed that in watching NASCAR, for example, they kept thanking those for serving. Jimmy Johnson's car had all of the Veterans from Lowe's employees listed on the 48 car. I think the gesture was very nice, but should that not be on the Veterans Day Car? I thought that Memorial Day was in memory of those who lost their lives.

Sorry if I am venting. I guess it is better that people recognize veterans during Memorial Day, than go for the 30% off sale without realizing why they have the day off.

Thinning Ranks.

Gentlemen,

The older gentleman in the middle of the picture below is my father. Dad was a World War II United States Army veteran who served in the Pacific. The photo was taken on October 1. He died just three months later on January 31 of this year. When I was delivering my father's eulogy I noticed an elderly gentleman sitting in the back of the church wearing a khaki uniform shirt with several medals pinned to it. At the end of the service as we accompanied my dad's flag draped coffin out of the church the old man in the khaki shirt stood at attention and saluted as my father went by.

At the cemetery a United States honor guard of 10 soldiers fired a 21 gun salute and conducted a beautiful service. At the end they folded the flag and gave it to me.

Before we left the cemetary the hearse driver asked me if I noticed the old man with the uniform in the church. I told him I did but did not have a chance to talk to him. The driver said, "Well I did and the old man told me he had served with your dad in the Phillipines and had seen your father's obituary in the paper. He came to say goodbye and accompany a fellow soldier on his final march."
