Shadowman Came Through Again

Just wanted to thank Shadowman for his encouragement in fixing my stupidity. I was replacing the valve cover bolts and set my inch pound torque wrench to 89 in lbs per the shop manual. Unfortunately, I trusted my wrench more than my intuition and snapped a bolt because the torque wrench malfunctioned. Like a dummy, I kept telling myself it shouldn't take this much torque and blindly trusted my torque wrench. Hence, I had to remove my valve cover to get the broken bolt removed and bought a new torque wrench. Everything worked out in the end, but it was sure reassuring to have Shadowman available for his consult.

The ARP bolts? ARP stainless is rated grade 8. I am surprised the aluminum did not strip out first.

Your torque wrench may be fine. Mine is calibrated to foot pounds and I almost set it to 89...12 times the spec torque for the valve cover bolts! Luckily I reread the instructions and saw inch pounds. Best to use newton meters, can't mess up on scale that way.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it was a faulty inch pound wrench and not a foot pound wrench. The worst part of the experience is that I ignored that part of my anatomy that resides between my ears. I knew I was exerting too much force and kept doing it anyway. Man, did I feel stupid. I now own a new inch pound torque wrench.

Thanks for the input on the Starter Motor Connector last year. I purchased the Toyota Connector Housing, P/N 90980-11400, last fall from my local Toyota dealer, and today, while I was doing an oil change, I looked at the one that had melted at Miller Mototsports Park during Rally VI. I was able to remove the melted one that GTTech had temporarily held on with RTV, and was able to get the rest of the connector off of the wire connector, so I didn't need the Teminal Repair Wire, Toyota P/N 82998-12480, to spice into my starter wire. The new connector housing is exactly the same as the OEM, except for its color (grey instead of white). It's a great fix, and I plan to order a few spares, along with designing a heat sheld to protect it from the Rear Exit Headers (M-9430-GTX).
