I am curious as to what route some of you guys are taking from Detroit to VIR. I plan to trailer down and
spend one night on the road. Possibly trailer to Beckley WVa. ? and then on to VIR in the am to unload/leave
trailer at the track and drive GT and FSeries to Hotel.
Anyone with Route experience or suggestions?
All Advice appreciated.

Andy, Good point! I was just going to rely on my Tom Tom...haven't planned the trip yet. Traveling alone so maybe we can hook up along the way.

Hey guys,

I have a place in VA and travel down to VIR on occasion....first of all, there is no direct route or easy way in from your direction. You can either go 77 to beckley and cut over on 64 to 81 then hop the mountain and get on 29 south which will take you directly into Danville (which is the closest city to VIR) about 6-8 miles to the track. The other way is take 77 all the way down to the border of VA then work your way east on backroads. If I were in the GT I would take 64 but in a truck and trailer....most likely take 77 all the way south then worm your way over.
Look forward to seeing you guys there!

Thanks... I was talking to Rex (Cobrar) at the Woodward Dream Cruise. Seems he has a brother who lives 6 miles from our UmsteadHotel and he drives it often from Detroit.
Rex - If you see this thread, can you give us your input.???

My Mapquest says:
I-275 to I-75 to I-280 to I-80 (ohio turnpike), then I -77 South for 350miles.
Exit I-77 S at Hillsdale/Galax onto US-58 East --stay on US-58 East all the way to Danville. From there it is about 15 miles to track. Go to track first, unload GT and leave Trailer at the Track. Drive to Umstead Hotel.

Andy,

Woody (529GT) nailed it spot-on. The key is that you guys that are trailering (assuming you have the option to drop the tow vehicle/trailer at VIR) should stay on 77 and then work your way east on 64/81/29, and probably overnight in Danville (unless the adrenalin rush has set-in). It is the easiest route to trailer, and it makes for a short drive to Cary.

As I do get to Cary, NC often, I don't typically go thru VIR to get there. The most direct driving route to Cary is 75 south to 80 east to 77 south to 40 east across NC ~ door-to-door is about 10 hours depending upon # of stops. The Ulmstead Hotel is in Cary, NC. From memory, VIR is ~ 2 hours from the Hotel, depending upon route and of course driving style.

As long as there is a provision to drop the trailer at/around VIR, I'd do just that. No need to haul it down to Cary. At the conclusion of the event, you load up at VIR and can drive back to Detroit (non-stop).

Hope this helps, I'd follow Woodys lead.

DBK stated in the Rally V info thread that ...YES, WE COULD DROP TRAILERS AT VIR. THEY HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM. Then we can drive GT's and Trucks ( as needed) to the hotel . We can then reload at VIR when we are ready to leave on October 2nd.
I certainly plan to leave my trailer at VIR on July 28th.

Just as info...I am now going to the Umstead rather than leaving my trailer at the track. Dave has confirmed goodly amount of Parking near the Umstead (see his --trailering'' thread--) and also that the trek to the track from I-77 on 58 has a lot of hills, curves and 35mph. good for the GT, not so good with a trailer I suspect..
see you there..we leave from Detroit Saturday, on to Erie Pa for a few days and then to THe Umstead...
see you there.

As Andy mentioned, I took the route to VIR directly from Detroit and it had way too many twists and turns to enjoy with a truck and trailer. I'm just gonna roll straight to the hotel. I may take the trailer to the track on Wednesday anyways because I have to load up a bunch of Matech parts to bring back to the Umstead. Camilo and I are driving down on Sunday.
