Can someone please provide some direction as to how to remove the rear view mirror that is affixed to the windshield.

Thanks in advance for your reply!

I don't want to take undue credit for advice, this answer is from Shadowman who would have posted it if he could. I hope the post will not be deleted or edited since the information is IMO valuable to members regardless of / in spite of / notwithstanding who created it. If it offends you, you can ignore the source.

I am sure that the GTguy, or Kendall could and would have provided the same information when they got a chance to, but sometimes a timely response can keep a project moving and lessens anxiety.

Below quote from Shadowman.

Please reply for this person

Place a towel on the dash

Then rotate the mirror all the way down and then while holding both sides methodically pull it down towards the dash and the spring retainer will open up and the mirror will come off leaving the mounting plate secured to the windshield.

Does that method work for other Ford mirrors or only the GT?

Don't know. The other mirrors that I have removed had a set screw that when loosened the mirror could be slid up and off. The FGT mirror had no such screw and I was baffled on how to remove it. Shadowman gave me this same advise before the TX rally.

Note once the mirror is removed, it is very difficult or impossible to put back on without a fixture to hold the spring clamp apart. I replaced it with a Gentry mirror that has Homelink, Temperature and a compass in it.

Another FGT owner said I am changing my FGT into a Vette! I wonder who that was?

I would trust that Shadowman knows of what he speaks (from experience) as I know he has upgraded the mirrors. Just to note, however, the Service Manual on page 501-09-12 describes a very easy process to;

1) Disconnect the electrical connector from the mirror.
2) Depress the retainer and remove the mirror.

The retainer appears to be at the bottom of the mirror and the diagram shows the mirror sliding upwards off of the mount.

Once again, I am quoting the manual... and it wouldn't be the first time it was wrong.

BlackIce, Shadowman and others, Thank you for your reply.

I did exactly as described and the mirror released with no problem.

Here are a couple of photos of the mirror releasing form the retainer clip.

In my case the retainer clip released from the top of the clip towards the bottom. I was careful to keep even pressure while pulling the mirror down toward the dash.
When reinstalling the mirror I started with the bottom of the mirror retainer placed on the top "bracket" that is affixed to the windshield and (with some pressure) slid the mirror back into place.

I am curious to why you needed to remove the mirror and then replace with the same?

To help simplify the installation of a mounting bracket that holds a V1 radar detector.

Photos please.

The radar detector gets it power from the review mirror. When you exit the car and the mirror lights go out the unit turns it's self off, then when you start the car there is constant power to the radar detector.
No need for plugging into you power jack.

Just an observation.... that's a very old V1 detector, back when they first added laser detection by adding that additional the extension to the bottom of the case. You can go to Valentine's website and key in the serial number to see an upgrade charge to a brand spankin' new unit. The newer units have improved detection and will be a little smaller/lighter for the mount you have chosen.

You mean trade in "Old Faithful"!!!

I was unaware you could do that. I will check out the website. Thanks for the heads up!
