****************************************************************
Updated this post on July 6, 2013:

1) Departure will be Tuesday, September 3 and we will have a LONG driving day.
Note: Many of you have called and PM'd me that your preference is to do a 1-day journey. If anyone wants to make a compelling argument for a 2-day journey, please post. However, note that Monday is the end of a 3-day weekend and there will be a LOT of traffic.

2) As we will have a long drive - and virtually everyone has asked for an "interesting" route, we will need to get an early start. As such, let's congregate early Tuesday morning - 6:00am and push off no later than 6:30am.

3) I am looking for two segments - a before lunch and a longer, after lunch segment. Everyone will receive a map with the stopping points on Tuesday morning (or Monday night). Looking for a quick bio-stop mid-way through the morning segment and then lunch planned in Cambria, CA.

4) After lunch we will continue North on scenic Highway 1 along the Pacific coast. We will need to giddy-up through out lunch break and continue our trek up to the hotel. A wildcard we will have to deal with is traffic through the San Francisco area.

5) If we can keep everyone on pace - the target is to arrive at the Hotel before 7PM.

********************************************************************

OK, following on the heels of a substantial amount of work done by Ed Sims and Senor Bannister, I'll do the easy lifting and coordinate a lifetime-memorable Pacific Coast Highway pre-rally to the Rally. I hope, with the help of many others here that we can make this such an attractive venue that some of you shipping your cars to Rally 8 will opt to ship them to SoCal instead and join a large group of us for a scenic, twisty drive up the Pacific Coastline!! You Scottsdale dudes - please consider to join us!!!

So, we will paint this canvas over the course of the next few weeks - but here's a rough-in as a starter.

1. Departure will be Tuesday, September 3. Let's target an EARLY 6:30am!!! departure as we will have a full day! (Get some rest the night before!)
2. Departure place will be from Northern Los Angeles County. There are 6-8 hotels within a two block radius in the area listed below that you may spend Sunday night in for a Monday a.m. departure.

https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=&ie=UTF-8&q=hotels+near+91381&fb=1&gl=us&hq=hotels&hnear=0x80c2811ac87e419f:0xa2d8203a2d33be46,Stevenson+Ranch,+CA+91381&ei=5c1IUfaFJpTy8ATVzIGQDg&ved=0COYBELYD

3. For the most part we will obey the laws of man and nature.... but if Rocketman joins us, all bets are off! (Seriously, I think most of the group will be driving at very reasonable speeds - and what a site it will be!)
4. If you want to ship your car here, I am happy to receive it and store it indoors until your arrival (first come, first served).
5. If you want anything done to your car - from mild to wild, you can ship your car to us earlier and we'll have it ready when you get here.
6. Everyone think about shipping your excess luggage to the hotel in NorCal so you can enjoy your drive without the booty attached to the roof. (It's hard to open the doors with the suitcases strapped up there!)
7. We can think about getting transports to ship the cars back to SoCal so we don't have to do the round trip unless you want to.

Please chime in here and I will start a list of those interested. Ping me publicly or privately with suggestions - but I already KNOW that I can pull off a great trip because I've done this rodeo once or twice before!

In if I can meet you somewhere along the central coast. You being a former Central Valley-ite, Kendall, you may know the best place for me to rendezvous with the caravan.

If you have enough people going, I would say it wouldn't be too hard for me to line up a gopher truck to lug up the luggage rather than shipping back and forth.

I would need a safe place in your area to leave my tow vehicle and trailer. Easy?

Since it is 2,615 mi from my future Florida home to Santa Clarita vs. 2,983 mi direct to Napa, it only makes sense to join this convoy. :lol

A sag wagon for luggage would be sweet!

Obviously what I'm about to throw out here has already been considered, but!....At first I expected to see an overnight stop along the way, given the distance, cool things to stop and see along the way, countless photo ops, and the usual logistics created by a group of people traveling together (e.g., pee schedules varying, etc.). So I'll suggest it anyway. Leave a day earlier and overnight in Monterey. :biggrin

Looks like a great idea to me!

We'll decide on 1-day or a 2-day adventure on a popular vote. Definitely enough to do and see for 2-days so let's go by what most people want to do. Arrival time is fixed, so obviously if we decide on a 2-day drive we will shove off a day earlier. I think there's no rush on a final verdict unless someone tells me otherwise.

If staying in Monterey, or Carmel, I would recommend the Hyatt Regency -

http://monterey.hyatt.com/hyatt/hot...|11994321447|mtid|3944cfd18966|&hyattprop=yes

It's the old Mark Thomas Inn where all the racers used to stay in the 60's, and still do today. Beautiful Inn on the Del Monte Golf Course - very pleasurable with a great bar and nice restaurant for breakfast - my favorite in the Monterey area & shouldn't be too crowded at that time of year. Check for group rate.

I could tell you some interesting stories from the Pacific Grand Prix (1st edition) in 1960. Ah well...

That's me in the blue coat & stupid hat!
Shelby was racing with nitroglycerine pills under his tongue, due to his heart condition. He won the USAC Sports Car Championship at this race, and promptly retired. This was his last race! I believe we finished 5th & 7th in the 2 heats, but wound up 2nd overall - we only needed a 4th to secure the championship!

Didn't mean to hijack the thread - just wanted to mention that the Hyatt Regency would be a great place to overnight in Monterey.

Of course, the Del Monte Lodge is also another great location to spend the night.

As far as I'm concerned you can hijack any thread you want with pictures and experinces like those. Very cool!
