Radiator Grills?

Guys,
Is their any truth to the radiator grills (behind) on a 2005 contributing to high heat tempetures on the track?

Are the 06's different?

Thanks,

The answer is yes; however it seemed to be a problem only on the track during what are typically 20 minute sessions.

FYI the 06 is different in that they do "not" have a grill but rather a surround to support the opening.

I will disagree. My '05 with grill AND bra have never overheated, even at three track sessions. Now maybe I don't push it so hard at the track, but for usual driving I've had no problem.

Yes. Red cars are different though.

'Very astute observation, D.B! They are different. For some reason they just can't generate the higher speeds necessary to CAUSE heating pblms! :wink :eek:ld:

I should have been clearer;

Ford found that when they exercised the gals on the 20 minute sessions as a component of being included in the SVT program that the gals with the 05 grills could not complete the session as such the grill was removed and then they were able to hence the reason (as I understand) for the change.

Now as with you; most have not had a problem and likely never will.

In addition to this the 05 grill is a great collector of bugs and rocks whereas the 06 being open has all this activity on the heat exchanger itself as such The GT Guys created a cool removable grill that protects the core during normal activities and yet allows for maximum air flow on the track.

I think he may be asking about the "back" side of the radiator. I removed both the front screen and the back screens for better flow... I can't tell that it helped any. :confused

I missed the word "behind" .... this is what happens when I speed read; sorry

The perf panels behind the cooling cores is the same throughout production

Thanks for the replies, Shadowman I did actually mean the front grill (why I typed behind I don't know) anyway a few years ago I was at Road America here and I believe Ford was here with a few GT techs and I thought I recalled a conversation regarding the grills and the A/C (all their cars had the A/C removed).

I didn’t know about the grill kit from the GT Guys, I’ll have to look into it.
Anyone running one?
Thanks,
Joe

So I was "over the top" in my reply by missing the word "behind"; perfect.

Now as for The GT Guys grill; it is designed to look like the 05 and is used as a bug catcher of sorts however at the track one removes it.

It requires that you remove the 05 grill and install the 06 surround; FYI this process requires that you remove the nose of your gal.

The process is not difficult however will take several hours.

If I can assist let me know

Hello Joe,

The GT Guys screen is easy to remove at the track. I've run my TT with it on, and no problems. I did take it off my Whipple Supercharged car at the track because I thought it might have led to the overheating problems I'd been having. The car still overheats though with or without it.

Hey Rick, if it's not too much hassle, any chance you can put your screen on for this Sunday's Santa Barbara run? I have not seen one yet.
I would really like some protection in front of my radiator core when we drive to and from Texas.
Thanks.

It's already on. I used the car for a trip to the cabin this last weekend. :thumbsup

To answer the original question the early 2005 front grille will affect air flow. Asking if the car will overheat is another question as this is all based on driving style and ambient temps. As Shadowman shared with the 20 minute track sessions is true because that is what we told him some 2+ years when he hosted us at his facility for one of our GT get togethers. It was Tom Reichenbach that pushed this running change through during the program. I forget the exact number but it was calculated out that about 20% of the opening was blocked by the screen material. Thus allowing less airflow into the cooling module and therefore adding to the overheating issue. So just imagine if you took and taped off 20% of the front opening with 100mph tape and then tried to track the car, you could now see the visual on the restriction. Now with that history lesson the part that we created is for the guy that wants to block out the road debris for his street driving and then easily (3 bolts) remove the front screen, then track the car and get the most airflow withouth other major modifications.

Has anyone attempted to remove either the 05 or 06 grill without removing the front fascia/bumper? It seems that there is a small possibility that it may come out from below if you remove the front splitter.

Removing the front fascia/bumper is a PITA!

I would not attempt to do so because there are numerous very small screws that secure numerous pieces to the fascia; the process to remove the gal's nose is not difficult and the risk of secondary damage is nil if properly protected.

I have removed them and assisted others from afar do the same and every time the process was a success.
