Problem with a radar detector and rear laser shifter - Help

Here is my issue. I recently had a escort 9500 ci, which is radar detector and laser shifter, installed. The back laser shifter sits right on the license plate holder and the wires run through driver side side wall all the way up to the subwoofer.

I am getting false readings on the laser shifter everytime I basically put my foot on the gas. According to the manufacturer the shifter and or wires are sensitive to electro magnetic interferrence which would cause the false signal.

First, has anyone installed one of these and had this type of problem and if so how have they fixed it?

Second, does it make sense that the exhaust and or wires running on the side up back through the middle would cause the electro magnetic interferrence? THe company has suggested ferrite chokes (iron donuts) around the wires etc..

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

The only thing that could be generating a strong EMI would be the ignition system. Do the false readings get worse with higher RPMs? I would also ask the manufacturer for their specification as to what they would deem an acceptable EMI range and then start eliminating the culprit.

I will inquire with the manufacturer but to date all I have gotten is that the system is sensitive to EMI. The readings are pretty constat, basically once I start the car and drive it consistently goes off.

Where is the ignition system on the car. I will bet that is the culprit.

Are you sure your wires haven't melted already? DriveBy had a similar problem with melted wires.

Your Cell Phone and whole slew of electronic gadgets all generate EMI, so by their definition the Radar Detector should be allergic to the universe. Try to get them to specify the EMI range they are deigned to properly operate under.

What good would specs do if you don't have specialized equipment to test EMI levels and have the expertise to reduce them. I would say the product is not as good as it could be, or the installation is faulty.

I had the Escort 9500 ci installed in my White/blue stripe 2005 Ford GT. Absolutely no problems or false alarms. Also, no problem with melting wires after 1700 miles of driving. I suggest checking the wire plug connection in the front, that connects to the radar unit. I first had an issue where the pins were not lining up, so my installer cut the cap off, and connected the individual wires directly. No issues since then.

Primarily to isolate Known Design Specifications of the GT's subsystems. In other words, if the Radar Detector manufacturer claimed an EMI range of XXX to YYY and your able to match that to what say the Ignition System is generating, then you could start looking for the needle in the haystack. If it is a faulty installation, then I would imagine they would provide guidance to isolate improper installation

Seth, where did they run the wires from the back of the engine to the front Also, is it possible you could pm with your number so we could discuss. Much appreciated.

Frank is correct, but it was my rearview camera wires - they are insulated now. My K-40 rear radar/laser detector box is a heap of melted goo, but still works perfectly - no tickets! :banana

My wires have not melted. The issue is probably the wire is too close to the processor box and is therefore probably picking up the em interference. The install was done by someone who has extreme knowledge of the GT but probably wasnt as familar with the radar laser system. I am now going to have it looked at by a radar laser installer. Will keep everyone posted.

DriveBy, you have to drive your car fast on the public roads to get tickets.

There's another thread on the install of this system. I have it in my GT as well. I've "melted" the wiring on two different occasions. And the second time, there was heat shield on the wiring and it melted right through the heat shield.

"Team Jeff" installed a heavier heat shield and rerouted the wires so they would not run as close to the exhaust. I've not had them "melt" again yet. But we'll see how she does with two days at VIR - Rally V!

BTW - I've got a Stillen XPipe. I'll ask Jeff to comment on his latest wiring route.
