Sure it's the history, but the knock on effect of the color scheme built by the same manufacturer has a definite impact on value that far exceeds the color. What is the secondary market value of a "Gulf" colored Prius?

Without doubt the 1968-1969 winning Gulf car is more valuable the than 1967 winning car. The original 1966 car is a different matter, tough call.

Don't get confused thinking that I am saying that a Heritage Ford GT "should be worth more than any other color Ford GT", I am only stating that it is that way and will continue to be so, forever. It is a whole other discussion about whether it should or not and how much that difference should be. These are emotional things, not logical, if it was logical we wouldn't own one at all.

All fun stuff. I'll tell you what, we'll check in in 20 years and if a Heritage Ford GT is only worth $7000 more than a regular color Ford GT, I'll finally put on that latex "Gulf" Ford GT shirt I bought from a past owner (it's on my website) and walk down West Hollywood on a Friday night at 11pm.

If you like what you have seen in the way of Ford GT prices over the past 10 years, give it another 10 years, it won't be less than today...

:agree: Janet is helping out.

Ford did not provide support to John Wyer Racing. The livery is Gulf Oil's. The heritage is Gulf Oil's, not Ford's.

I'm with the "it's just a paint job" group. But I wish you all the best.

I'd like to find out - unfortunately, I don't think I'll be around in 20 years, but if I am, I'll still have my GT....

Errrr - I'm guessing you meant a Gulf colored FIAT? And FWIW, my bet is the Heritage will always be worth substantially more...

We are watching The Big Valley on MeTV and the episode had Marty Allen as a guest star. In the search to put a name to the face I eventually ended up on his bio on imdb.com. One of his personal quotes is just so funny but so appropriate here:

A study of economics usually reveals that the best time to buy anything is last year.

A few years ago I read that most on GT40's.com (a forum stacked with owners of originals as well as tribute cars) thought the '67 Gurney Foyt car was the most valuable GT 40 of all.

I have read most of the posts on that website over the years, and I catalog them (as I do this site, I save important posts and references to refer to for research purposes). There are actually so many posts about 1075 being the most valuable GT40 in existence I can't count, mainly due to it winning Le Mans twice, sentimentality of the "Gulf" color, etc. I have seen a few posts about the 1967 car described as such based on the idea from an "American" perspective as it was an "All American" achievement so to speak. I have read many more posts about the “First Win” 1966 car being the more coveted car than the 1967 Gurney-Foyt car. But the 1968-69 #1075 car is by far and away universally considered the most valuable GT40 in the world when you read all the posts on that site as well as many others.

This is correct, but doesn't matter (my dad worked for Gulf Oil and knew Grady Davis). The whole "Gulf" thing is riding the backs of not only the two 1968-1969 Ford GT40 wins but the subsequent Porsche wins as well. Without doubt it is "just a paint job" in reference to the modern Ford GT, but obviously it has a "marketing" effect just as Grady Davis and others hoped it would.
