Power steering noise

In order to get the reduced prices, your dealer has to be registered with fordparts.com, and supply them with the discount that they would sell the parts to you. It is not mandatory that dealers sign up with fordparts.com. My nearest dealer, Bishop Ford, is not registered with fordparts.com, therefore I would need to pay the full retail that Ford sets for the part prices.

I know this is an old thread, but my GT is now exhibiting 'power steering whine'. Whenever I turn the steering wheel I can here the whine. The noise on my car, however, appears to be coming from the front passenger side corner of the car.

Has anyone experienced the same thing and can anyone shed light on this issue?

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

I was getting some power steering whine, particularly when cold. A quick check of the reservoir dipstick showed it below the stick. I added about a cup of recommended fluid to get it to the top of the fill line. I hate to admit it, but it's probably the original fluid from the factory, other than what I added.

And no, my hose is not leaking.

Thanks Pete.

I checked my power steering fluid reservoir and it was near bone dry.

With everything closed on Christmas, I wasn't able to buy any power steering fluid. Service manual says use MERCON automatic transmission fluid, but I don't think Ford makes that anymore.

Does anyone have suggestions for the power steering fluid and will I be able to 'mix' the new fluid with the stock fluid?

As far as I know, Ford still sells Mercon ATF. I use it every year when I change my PS fluid.

UPDATE: I filled the reservoir with power steering fluid, started the car and worked the steering back and forth to the stops (lingering for no longer than a second) and the whine went away.

Also, the original MERCON fluid (XT-2-QDX) is not widely available. It apparently was superseded by MERCON V (XT-5-QMC) which IS available and according to Ford is backward compatible with the original MERCON (no 'V' in the name) and is recommended going forward. DO NOT use MERCON LV which is NOT backward compatible.

It doesn’t matter if it’s original Ford MERCON fluid. Any PS or ATF that has the “MERCON” rating will do (but not “LV” as Eric noted). I just looked on my shelf for a bottle of ATF with MERCON on the label and used that.

Note to everyone else: flushing the power steering fluid is not part of a regular service, so you may not be aware if your fluid level is low. If you are one of those owners who changed your PS return hose, you would have drained most of the fluid and replaced it, so your level should be good.

Everyone else, go out to the garage and check it.
