Power steering noise

No noise at normal driving but as soon as I do some aggressive turns or hard launches with only drag raidial tires i get the whine.
It seems like it is related to g forse. Then a few weeks back I trailered my car to a car show in sub zero temps and when it was cold it made the same noise until it warmed up. You think the fluid has condisation in it. Can I chang the fluid without taking off the bottom shields ? Suck it out from the top? And do you think this is the issue? Fluid is not low and I have no leaks. I think fluid with my car experiance but looking if anyone had this issue and fixed the problem.

Is the whine coming from the rear (pump) or the rack? (The pump is located at the front of the engine, bottom, on the passenger side.) Hopefully you've just gotten some air in the system and it will work its way out. Typically this is done but turning the wheel lock to lock a few different times. Worst case is that you may need to replace the pump but it is not that difficult of a job.

Not sure but I thought it was the supercharger the first time I heard the noise so maybe it is coming from the rear. I do notice it more after a lock to lock . Can you bleed the system? The pump only makes noise after these 3 things

1 lock to lock a few times
2 hard straight line with g force
3 cold below zero weather (just found that out)

other that that no noise.

thx for letting me know the pump is in the rear.

I have lots of car experiance just was lazy about this . I will fix and keep in my memory next time another member needs help.

If it has water in the oil, you will see milkiness in the reservoir. If no milkiness, I would not suspect about water in the oil. Air bubbles sounds more like it (pun intended), but then the question is, how did air get in there? Is the reservoir low? How many miles on the car?

No milk shake. Looks like it is filled enough. 26k miles and as far as I know never changed. The first time the noise happened was in a lock to lock and hard turning on a small auto cross track for fun. I let the guy running the event drive it with me in the car and then he let me drive all the lambos and ferraris for free lol. Again at first I thought I blew up the blower but was happy to here it was the power steering whine. Because the noise was coming from the rear it threw me off but I know power steering whine and turning the steering wheel confirmed it.

After I let it sit and cool down the noise goes away. And after taking it off the trailer on a below zero day also gave the same whine until the car was warmed up. Sounds like a fluid issue to me. Any other thoughts?

yep I had the same issue on one of my cars. I thought too it was the supercharger or belt and then even thought it was a rear hub makeing like a low pitch squaling noise. seem to do it more when it was just barely warmed up and in turns. didn't do it straight driving. I found out that what had happened was earlier that month I had checked the power steering fluid level and left the reservoir cap laying on top of the tire. had filled it a little bit and then shut the clamshell. my wife called me and said there is something laying in the driveway all broken up but it says "ZF" on the top. sure enough , I backed over it.
long story short, it took several minor fill ups to get the air out of the power steering system. even being slightly low made the pump make noise so I guess just keep topping it off. possibly change the fluid as well. I think draining it from the front where the PS cooler and lines are would be better and then the reservoir in the back. jmo

Similar issue with my tractor in the winter when I go out to move snow (ie below freezing to about -15f). It has a hydrostatic power system and until
the fluid in the entire system is warmed up the pump will make a whining noise. I exercise the front loader to help move the fluid which cycles the fluid and warms it. Steering input seems to be the largest demand on the system and causes the most noise until warm.
Asked the tractor company about the noise and they say its common and they had a lighter weight fluid/oil for winter use that prevented it.
While not a GT, this is a hydraulic system that in principal is similar in being a demand type system.(i would think, but may be wrong..Dont shoot me if it please).
Air in the system could be a break in the supply lines/ fault in the pump or a low fluid level in the reservoir that allows the pump to draw in air. The first two would probably have a leak associated with it. Checking the fluid after shutdown , with a flashlight and look for tiny bubble in the fluid.

Hope this help.. GL

I signed up for "internet pricing" at my local dealer and regularly get about 35-40% off the prices on the Fordparts.com site.

It has been a while, but I think I registered online with the Fordparts.com site and it automatically put me in that pricing category at the dealer. The guys at the part counter act as tho I am far from their only customer to do so. If you can't find the registration, the guys at the parts counter would probably be able to guide you.

I will dig around, I did it back in 08' when I bought a GT500. Memory on that a bit foggy now.

No worries, I get pretty good counter pricing already on items that dont make sense to get from Torrie (shipping on big or heavy items). I was wondering if it was a different level of access, and easy or ordering on line etc.

Great, I honestly can't remember how I did it, but I will ask the counter guys next time I go in. Found out on the GT battery which I was not wanting to pay for shipping on.
