My wife's parents are Swiss, 3 siblings born in Switzerland, etc etc, and she loves everything Swiss, and we would normally be glad to help ... however, we are in Florida ~1,000 miles from Illinois so I'm not sure we can help from here ... ?

That location is in nowhere Illinois, not close to anything except Champaign where University of Illinois is at. What could you possibly be buying? Tractor parts?

For 4600 it sounds like the whole tractor.

I don't see how having someone pick it up and bring it to a UPS/FedEx/DHL store is going to cost significantly less than having the shipper pick it up directly.

How much of that is duty and VAT?

I would try DHL or TNT.

I don't think you pay VAT on something coming in country, and I don't know if the Swiss have TUV? But the location is sure in the middle of nowhere. The outfit that makes handgrips for Colt is in Rantoul, home of an ex Air Force base.
