I kill several of those a year here in Texas. You learn to wear gloves when you handle anything thats been in a storage shed for a while.

'Hope that pic isn't actual size!!! :lol

'Hate 'spydees'...and 'snakees'. Either one gives me a terminal case of the gallopin' clangs.:ack

Somelee, that is an excellent photo. Could you please e-mail it to me for teaching purposes? Thanks Frank

see a few of them around here also. Its the brown recluse that always gets me wondering .... so I kill any spider (except a wolf spider) that I see. "Kill them all and let God sort them out." :lol I have the same policy on snakes, coyotes, gophers, and the dreaded middle of my nap door knocking Jehovah's Witness. (ok, just joking about the last one). :biggrin

+1 on Frank's comment ... great photo! :thumbsup:thumbsup

Its the brown recluse that always gets me wondering ....

My wife spent 3 days in the hospital due to a brown recluse bite on her shin. They pumped her full of antibiotics so the bite did not get into her bone. There are a few people here in Florida that have lost a limb because of those spiders.

Ditto that Moody. We lost an English setter two years ago, and the fellow training with her had to fight off a wicked bite with (probably) the same antibiotics. Problem is, this happened at a field trial event in central/northern IL, and ten years ago, no one even heard of a brown recluse around here. If you google the images of the spider and the bite results, it is not pretty.

The picture shown is a "BLACK WIDOW" spider....not a Brown Recluse. Note the red 'hourglass' shape on the abdomen...both deadly.

Yep ... but the Recluse is more "covert" and most people just don't know that they are worse than the Black Widow. Is a pretty photo .... especially for a logo'd spyder. :lol

I think its funny that one of the identifying traits of a recluse is the 6 eyes (3 sets of diads) instead of 8 which most spiders have. Who the heck wants to get close enough to see how many eyes it has?

I had one living in the wheel well of one of my cars. I found it while I was servicing the car. Scary when you are on a creeper.

As an aside, most brown recluse spider bites occur in the crotch. They climb into your pants while they are laying on the floor. When you put the pants on, you get a NASTY bite. There is no antivenom and no real treatment. Some doctors still shoot steroids in the bite wound, but usually ineffective. I've done several autopsies on spider bite victims, and the scarring, if you survive, is unbelievable. OK and TX are the worst places. The venom dissolves tissues (necrosis) and, similar to snakebite, makes your blood hemolyze.

Somelee, thank you very much for the pictures. Photos in textbooks don't do these wicked little creatures justice. Thanks Dr. Frank

Speaking of snakes...

Two male buddies were walking through the woods when out of no where, a poisonous snake came and bit one of the men right on his penis!

The man collapsed to the ground, whilst his friend whipped out his cell phone and called the doctor. "Help, help" He said "my friend was just bitten on his penis by a snake. The doctor tells him that he can't possibly get to the woods in time to save the friend. He tells the guy if his friend is to live, he's going suck the venom out. The man hangs up and hurries back to his friend.

The poor guy looks up at his friend "Well what did the doctor say?" he asked. "Sorry bro" says the man, "looks like you're going to die."

I was at Veronica & Chip's place tonight for a girly get together. We had an interesting and not so pleasant conversation about wind scorpions, little scorpions getting on the ceiling and falling on the bed when you are sleeping, and tarantulas. Then I get on here & read about deadly spiders and snakes. :frown I doubt I will sleep well tonight either!
