It was obvious to me that it was mat goo fumes that were killing the gauges when the car is parked with the windows closed for long periods of time.

The next thing that we're going to find out, is that there's a correalation between "matt goo" and failed gauges!!!

:)

I had both problems! They are definitely correlated!

That said, remember than correlation is not necessarily causation.

The glue will eventually dry and flake away

Then we will be scrambling to get them...

I hope so. I still have mine, but out of the car. Almost like new. Maybe I can get top $ for them on flee bay.

I don't want the goo all over the floor of the car! :ack

If and when the dry out my kids can use them.

Many European cars - at least Porsche, Ferrari, probably others - have a coating on their plastic bits that eventually turns to goo. A search on the Ferrari site will turn up a bunch of posts about 'sticky' interior bits. Once it starts, no turning back. These mats seem to have the same issue, almost like decomposing.

Oddly, my car has been in a very hot climate (first Phoenix now Alabama) and has 32k miles, but no goo. Until now, since I probably jinxed it. Interesting to see if the new OEM mats last, or are any different from originals. Clearly Exoticares carbon or other carpet mats are the safer bet.

floor mats saga

The new mats came in and were leaking in the bag. The parts person sent a quality control check into Ford which he copied me on the email. No response from Ford to the dealership.

Have to store mats flat

If sideways in ship box it will leak down....flat on shelf fine

Did round trip with muscle motors in 2008 on same issue

Does not matter how they arestored. If they are oozing, the rubber is not properly vulcanized or has degraded. They are defective.

Does the oozing stop? Can the "ooze" be cleaned from the inside liner/filler or will it just continue forever?

Rubber is fine

Ooze is glue

Yes, can be wiped down with cleaners mentioned earlier

These are glued down to floor....so it's set & forget

Not like ur flipping to vacuum or hose off every weekend

That's what I didn't like about the OEM mats. When I took them out they were glued to the floor, what a mess. After cleaning all of the crap off the floor, there was no way I was going to put that sh*t back into the car!

The ooze is coming from inside the mat, the foam portion of the rubber that provides the 'padding' is breaking down with age and leaking out. The rubber material is defective in manufacture. The 'new' oem mats are just likely old stock with the same problem, not new. They did not ooze in 2005, at least the few I saw.

Untli ford declares the current stock defective and disposes of it, orders replacement stock there will be no decent replacements.

This was what I was afraid of and closer to my conclusion when I pulled them last spring. I'm going to try again to clean the foam to see what it looks like. Maybe this weekend. I should be able to see how different they are from then.

Not to drag out a relatively boring post however I have an update. After my Ford dealership in Naples Florida diligently ordered mats a total of 5 times I have a perfect set. A large portion of them have the glue issue but there are some that do not. If you are in need of a set to store or use they can be found.

I've got that too too. Cleaned it up once with that orange cleaner stuff but I'm sure it's back

Do the other mats fit in the same holes and as deep as the originals? It looked like they went on top of the orignals

Today I spent 3 hours detailing the GT for the Good Guys show tomorrow. One of the last things I did was pull the floor mats to clean the grass and gravel out of them. I made a discovery....

The factory mats rubber mat with about a 1/2-3/4" foam insert. I'm almost positive that mat has a foam rubber (almost like a really good carpet pad) inserted into the molded mat. The foam rubber is glued to the rubber main mold, and that glue is what is disintegrating. The sticky glue was oozing around the edges of the unit. The driver's side was worse than the passenger side.

I pulled mine today to clean them - there was grass and gravel around the edges and the holes in the mat had stuff in them too so the easiest way was to pull them. Last summer I pulled them and used goo gone to clean all of the stuff off the floor. This time there was a little more, but the bottom of the mats were pretty clean except at the edge where the foam part was glued to the molded part of the mat. I think I got most of it cleaned up and putting them back was definitely less of a traumatic glue experience.

I put them back in at 3:15 and went to get gas, visited some friends and came home. In and out of the car 3 times, and the mats are covered with dust and rocks. I guess it's the down side of living in a small town. The up side is a kitt fox was in my back yard pouncing around for some kind of critter on Thursday morning.

Time for new floor mats! Ours line up to the top of the void. Heel pad is not as high as oem. Gives you more foot room. We can do full leather as well! Nice replacement for oem mats - no ooze!
