Look, this is a car forum. I take no joy in having people sending me flaming pissed emails telling me what a ****ing asshole I am for letting people piss all over their political views. That's happened twice recently, both times with the people saying they were taking their GT and going home from the site for good.

People know where Bony and I stand. Our views are clear. This is not a personal thing.

The world is getting heated. This will remain a place to cool off.

Dave, appears you lost some weight.

If it moves......

......Tax it.
If it keeps moving.... regulate it.
If it stops moving..... subsidize it.

General Motors and Chrysler appear to have arrived at stage three.

After reading with much interest the current 'Dire Automakers' thread (great insight, passion and sharing of details that helped round out my personal understanding of the issues - thank you gentlemen :thumbsup), and then the 'Truisms' thread :thumbsup, I just naturally assumed politics was OK again.

I guess I am like Chip and don't know where to tip toe.

Gentlemen,

I understand what you trying to accomplish and I'm on board. During my three year involvement with this forum I've had three posts deleted. Three out of 1100, a pretty good ratio. :biggrin Only one of those three had a political/tax policy slant. Avoiding threads criticizing candidates or political parties seems like a pretty good idea to me. But politics/government policy as it directly involves the automobile business and political humor/satire is hard to avoid in a time when two of the big three (with Ford providing moral support) United States automakers are begging Congress for taxpayer money to spare their lives. Never in the history of this country has the automobile business and politics/government been so inseparable.

The Ford GT and the hobby that surrounds it is as politically incorrect in this day and age as machine gun ownership and big game hunting. Members who own Ferrari's (Ford GTs get a bit of a reprieve here) regularly experience the disdain that a large segment of the public has for expensive exotic cars that burn a lot of fuel.

Politics dictates what type of cars can be built, how many miles per gallon a manufactures fleet must attain, what type of fuel can be refined, and about a million other aspects of the automobile and the automobile business.

Humor has always made a difficult situation easier to endure. Will Rogers made a living out of slamming our political leaders using humor as his mallet. If Daniel says my joke about Kenya was in bad taste, then it was in bad taste and he properly deleted it. But I have read some great political humor (some of it written by DBK and Bony) on this forum over the years and I hope that continues.

Our membership is heavily skewed toward entrepreneur/free-market, successful individuals who have a pretty homogenous political viewpoint. As such, discussions of candidates or parties is a waste of time.

My collective reading of Daniel's and Dave's comments on this thread however, indicate that a discussion of government policies and regulation related to the automobile business and tasteful political humor continues to be acceptable. I hope I read that correctly as I believe it strikes a proper balance. In today's environment, leaving politics out of a discussion of automobiles is like leaving water out of a discussion of scuba diving. It could be done, but it certainly wouldn't be easy.

At least that's my take on it.

My opinion/suggestion is that in the off topic forum, we should be allowed to discuss well...off topic stuff..which would include politics.

If there is so much controversy over it, why not reuqire posters to put POLITICS in the subject line and anyone that does not want to click on it does not have to.

The problem with that is most members probably click on the new posts tab at the top of the page. Many of us don't even look at what section of the forum a new post is in. Having witnessed the vitriol in political posts on the Shelby and Cobra forums and the bad fellowship that results from it, DBK has made the right move here. My car hobby is a temporary escape from the crazy world outside. Unless it has an impact on the automobile business, I will steer clear of anything political here. Plus.... I'd hate to get banned from my favorite virtual fraternity. :biggrin

I know what you're saying, but it's like a car wreck. People may not want to deep down, but they have to look. Porn is off topic too. We don't allow that either, subject line or not. :biggrin

As such, discussions of candidates or parties is a waste of time.

They are now. What's done is done.

When I started this place, it was based on the idea that you should only act like you'd act in real life. The other axiom was be nice. That doesn't mean everyone wanders around like a bunch of mindless pussies congratulating each other on their latest coat of wax, but at the very least, don't intentionally be a confrontational dick because you have the luxury of sitting behind a keyboard.

I don't want to see threads in Ford GT General Discussion about license plates that say "**** OBAMA". Nor do I want to see guys posting 15 of the same threads on why Obama is the anti-christ. It's over. For better or for worse, as Bony points out, in two months we've got a new wartime President while people's lives are on the line. Redundant posts that serve to inflame people who support one party or another are pointless. If something political comes up in the course of regular discussion, fine, but I will not have people starting threads that serve to just insult one group or the other (and who are we kidding, it's one group 99.99% of the time).

I'm just gonna throw out an example here, but let's say you were a guy name Ramal Bameedi, and you worked on a car called the Fjord GeeTee. You ardently supported a certain political candidate and when you read a website about the car you worked on and saw a bunch of dudes saying "**** that guy! Raar!" endlessly, would you ever want to come back? I wouldn't. How about dragging yourself and 10 of your employees to a car show with those people? Not me.

So yeah, in summary, please no overt "I hate Figure X and want him to die" threads. That's all I'm sayin.
