No Sound Limit Event at Laguna Seca

I just received an announcement of a no sound limit "uncorked" event at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA on September 12-13, 2009. A fellow member of the NorCal Shelby Club is organizing it. I've never had the opportunity to drive one of my personal cars at Laguna with no sound limits. Most open tracks have a 92 db limit (occasionally it's 90 db). Many unmodified stock cars won't pass the 92 (such as a later Z06 with the exhaust butterfly open or a car with side exit pipes like a Viper).

The announcement makes it seem like a race but I'm told it's an open track with run groups for street cars & other groups for full on track cars. http://clubautosport.net/uncorked.html

I spoke to Richard today about it. There are supposedly 5 groups (wow), 4 race groups and 1 street car group. 3 sessions per day, 20m 20m 25m. All the groups aren't committed yet ... so who knows what will happen.

I'm going. I might run my formula car in one of the race groups (even for racers, it's impossible to get test days at Laguna). Hell I might bring two cars. There are supposed to be some historic F1 and champ cars there!

even for folks that don't bring their car, it is sounding like it will be great event just to go and watch.

Ed,
Are you going to run your car or be a spectator? What do you need in order to take your car on the track? I would be interested in going. Let's get a group to run down.

Wow how cool would this be to participate in? Answer: Very cool! Imagine a whole pack of FGT's going through the corkscrew.

advanced drivers only

flyer says advanced drivers only, furthermore "race license required". no problem for me but even if they don't actually require the license it might be enough to scare off the novices. i'd suggest that given the economic conditions they would back down a bit but it's impossible to get an unlimited sound day at Laguna so i imagine it will fill up.

Sounds like an interesting day. Not sure if I would want to have my car out there with a bunch of guys getting the red mist. If they take it down a notch or two I might be there.

I'm all for this type of event, but just curious how it works? Or rather, why do they have a db limit at all? I always thought it was to ensure that they don't impact the surrounding neighbors. But if that is the case, do they need a waiver from those neighbors? Or is it just a precaution to ensure that they don't risk offending their neighbors?
It seems like it would be the equivalent of 'late landing night at San Jose airport' (they shut down operations at midnight or so).
Bear with me please. I'm clearly confused. :)

It is my understanding that the racetrack is allowed only a very limited number of days in which "loud" events can take place. Most of these days are used up each year by events such as The Historics or MotoGP or GrandAm...

sound limit

You are correct Gill Jr.

I don't think this type of event would have happened a few years ago but the recession is helping in the track use area for participants - for cost & availability.
