CSX 2601, the Lemans winner and the car that secured the World Manufacturer's Cup, was a no sale at $6.8m at the Mecum auction in Indy.

I was wondering what happened with the car in the "glass box" . I was watching the show and they kept showing the car, but couldn't hang around long enough to see the auction. So, if it bid up to 6.8 mill, how close to thereserve was it?

Too bad Larry Miller isn't around, I am sure he would have been in the bidding!

what do you think Mecum would have made on the deal at 6.8 Mil?

Curious why all these originals were at Mecum and not at BJ?

I think Mecum buyers commission is 6%. so @ 7.8 mill if that was the reserve, 408,000. but add to theat that sellers fee to mecum which I would presume would be at least6% if not more. On additional note I thought it interesting in how many of the Cobras did not sell.

As to why Mecum and not B-J? B-J auctions at least recently have been all no reserve auctions.

More interesting is that a competition 427 sold for "only" 1 million. A 427 in S/C configuration was a no sale at 1.3 million. A street 427 (which is really a 428) was only bid to 500,000 and did not sell. It would have been interesting to hear Bony's thougthts on the Mecum Auction. IMO it was by far the best assemblage of muscle cars at an auction ever. Congratulations to Mecum. :cheers

I certainly enjoyed watching the Mecum auction even whe ncars didn't sell compared to the circus of B-J. Now if only Mecum could get some eye candy like Amy Lassiter they would have it all.

The Mecum auction collection was amazing. The wealth of impressive cars - I cry when I see a well done Shelby Cobra - was unprecedented. I presume the alleged 'lightened' GT40 went? How much?
Finally a gripe about the BJ televised version. Seems that Speed's love of american muscle insures that they relegate the cars that I like (Porsche's, Ferrari's, etc.) to the commercial break. Returning back from the commercial brake you inevitably see some nice 911 burbling through the turn after exiting the stage. You miss almost all of them in favor of yet another 58 Buick.

Don't get me started about BJ - lots to complain about re: TV, in person. or behind the scenes! [I've bought several cars there over the years, but have sworn off.] That said, we still hit BJ at least one or two days every year but we've found ourselves spending more time at other AZ auctions (Bony was a master at that!).

You're absolutely right with your 911 example. We've seen some really interesting or rare cars go across the block in person, only to review the PVR later to find they were cut by a commercial break in favor of one of a bazillion Corvettes in the catalog, or an overdone resto-mod. :frown European cars have have taken a back seat to Robosaurus.

The Mecum HD programming was certainly enjoyable - a refreshing change from the predictable BJ Speed coverage. I'm sure it was even better in person (Indy GT, you lucky dog! :biggrin).

CSX 2601 is scheduled to try again at Monterey, which IMO is the venue for it to set the records which were expected at Mecum (xx,000,000) :cheers

I will always regret not attending the '09 Mecum Auction in Indiana.
