Chuck Yeager
Hi Chip, Great Airplane stuff.
Quite a few years back the parents of a former dental assistant lived in Grass Valley next to Chuck Yeager. They held a book of mine for over a year trying get Chuck to Autograph it. They never could get ahold of him, so I never got it.
I am envious of your autographed picture.
Tri,
Chuck Yeager is certainly not a gregarious fellow. Ever since I was a small boy I wanted to meet him, the original aviation God. Over the years I performed in many airshows with his best friend Bob Hoover. Mr. Hoover is a great guy in addition to being an amazing pilot. He was flying the T-38 chase plane alongside Chuck Yeager on the day he first broke the sound barrier. He made Ace in WWII before being shot down. Although Chuck Yeager was not an air show pilot he attended the Oshkosh Air Show almost every year during the late 90s when Bob and I were performers and during that event he had dinner with Bob Hoover every single night. Bob Hoover introduced me to Chuck Yeager and when I was with Bob, Chuck Yeager was my best friend too. But on those occasions when I was not with Bob Hoover, Chuck Yeager would not give me the time of day. :lol He was kind enough to sign that photo and send it to me at my home however.
I suppose at his age, with all he has done, and with so many people asking him for things all the time, he has a right to be intensely private. The photo below was taken in the pilot staging area at Luke Air Force Base, 1999, just before the start of the Luke Day Air Show. On that day, Bob Hoover and I performed the final airshow of our careers. For both of us, it was happy and sad at the same time.
