New Ford Filter

I was replacing my air filters today and notices that the new ones are white. Any thoughts? Did they get me the wrong one?

and I know Matt wanted to see a picture of the billet a-arms, so here ya go buddy :lol

That was my original thought. However, I thought the same thing about the K&N filters... then I heard about the oil on the MAF and bla bla bla. I figured if Shadow or Rich gives them their blessing everything must be ok.

Well, ya, but that's apples and oranges. An oil bathed filter vs a dry one.

'Only thing you'll pbly notice is: this new WHITE job is gunna look dirty sooner. A lot sooner.

They are white when new, yours must have had a lot of miles on it! :lol


Seriously, if it was bought new from a Ford dealer, in a Motorcraft box, then I would say it is safe to assume that Ford switched suppliers. As long as it is a dry paper filter, no worries about oil. Oil is only used on foam or fabric filters.

I am sure they both work well enough but why the change? I was hoping someone was familiar with the different materials used and could comment on their respective efficiencies.

Ya it was bought from a Ford dealer. I did notice that the both of the filter's rubber seal had a slimy (oil) coat on it. I am fairly sure the element was dry tho.

As long as it fits correctly and part number is right it's fine. Ford did change some of it's filters to a more "flame resistant" material due to some possible back fires on some model cars and trucks. The GT filter is used in other Ford cars that may have been one of the ones that needed the material change.

I think there was some discussion about the K&Ns and a few people found that they lost power going with them. Then of course there was the MAF issue. The oil on the K&N can fly up and hit the Mass Air Flow sensor causing bad readings and play havoc with the engine CPU. I would guess this happened on filters that were incorrectly oiled but I do not know.

Perfect; you will have no issues and yes IMO stay clear of the oil wicked K&N style

Filters

They will be fine. The reason they are different is because Ford has a production supplier for the production parts (assembly line) and a different supplier for some of the service parts. Not every part is like this but the air filters air. Some of you that have the 99-04 Lightnings have probably found the same thing with those also.

I have the K&Ns and have had em on for over 3000 miles and no issues whatsoever! Just better throttle response and more HP.

I hear the GT filters crosses with the Lightning Truck filters and the Truck filter are less expensive ?? True ? part number please ??:biggrin

We're using Lightning P/N Airaid filters in the GT and have had no ill effects. :thumbsup

Sorry to say but the bit of testing I did with K&N filters of the sama size etc on a dyno on the same car at the same period of time showed a LOSS of hp and trq more than once compared to the stock Ford paper filter. I do not run K&N filters on any of my vehicles.

How much loss of hp & where in the rpm?
