As some of you know I recently have moved into a larger home and am building out some areas of it. I am looking to buy a beginner racing simulator that I and my younger ones ( under 10) can enjoy. Any ideas or thoughts or suggestions of brand style etc. Thanks for all of the help in advance.

Funny, I was just going to ask the same question. I found a few sights but these are very expensive simulators starting in the $30k's up to the $70k's

Much more than I was looking to spend. I did stop by a Microsoft store in the mall and the had a simple setup using an XBox with a very large 70"+ screen and a driving seat. Perhaps take at look at that? But I too would be interested to see what anyone else has done

I looked at these a few years ago, but decided $70-$80k (I wouldn't have considered the cheaper versions) worth of tires and brakes and gas would give me a ton of track days. I suppose it depends on where you live, but with 5-6 tracks within 3-4 hours, real life experience seemed like a better investment/entertainment for me. Plus, as I'm "retired," I didn't want to spend my entire day sitting in the game room playing video games. They are cool though, and since you have kids who can't drive on a track, I suppose the $$$ would make more sense for you. The guys I talked to at both of these places were really cool and contacted other clients in my area to allow me to come demo the simulators (which I thought was a little weird and did not do).

David .. many choices for a moderately priced system.

You might take a look at the blog portion of Turn 10 Motor Sports. Turn 10 is the Microsoft Forsa game developer.

Some interesting inexpensive set ups have been written up there.

I have a set up like this, with an Xbox. Forza 6 is awesome. I position the seat front and center not too far away from a 110" 4k projector. It is a very inexpensive way to have a lot of fun. Me and my 4 year old get it on!

Fora is a lot of fun, but for a true sim / racing tool, get a PC and Iracing

http://www.iracing.com

Get a big monitor or protector, Logitech wheel, and this is an affordable seat

http://www.playseat.com.

Not as cool as an 80k option, but the funds left over you could get a real mustang to track.

Yeah, I'm not sure I get spending as much on a simulator as for a real track car.

How would you describe the difference between Iracing and Forza?

I use a Playstation with a simple and cheap setup. I bought mine solely to practice for a 24 hour race I was running at Paul Ricard, just to practice the track a bit prior to heading over to France. It worked well... and I found out that my daughter really enjoys it too (notice the pillows behind her back, a 10 year old would be fine). It's fun and worth getting...

Here's what I purchased after speaking to some hardcore gaming friends:

- Playstation
- Logitech G27 Racing Wheel
- Openwheeler Advanced Racing Seat & Shifter Mount
- And plenty of racing games :)

Hope this helps!

Lance

PS My wife loved the new addition to our living room, nice new furniture. I'm now looking to add this to our basement setup. lol

This is a cheap entry level with no motion but lots of fun on a host of different tracks and cars. You can change setups on your GT and really tell the difference. PlayStation with sound bar 27 inch gaming monitor Grand Turismo 6 and G27 wheel and pedals. Found the seat and POD made by truck racer Ricky Sanders for almost nothing

Forza (etc) are very good, and easy (cost wise) and an enjoyable video game. Iracing is a next level. Iracing is a simulator, not a video game. For instance, the tracks have all been laser measured to the nth degree. For instance, anyone been to the Watkins Glen? If you have, you know as you come out of the "toe of the boot", the track gives you a very subtle feeling you are going over "woopty doos". Iracing transmits this. The attention to detail also extends to off track references, EVERYTHING, buildings, trees, fences, etc, they are all there. This is all really handy if using this to prepare for that track.

Again NOTHING wrong with Forza etc, and there are other entertaining aspects that kids enjoy. Iracing doesn't have any of the entertainment, but is truly next level in a virtual track experience.
