Well, being a parent is full of life's little moments. Maybe being a "part-time" parent you get tuned in to savoring them for what they are .... "gifts". Any way we got up this morning and I ran down a list of things that we could do with our weekend together. Instead of the park, chuckee cheeses', riding bikes ... all of which he said ... "Nope I can do that with mom." He chose to work on the "race car". So today my five year old son and I did brakes, SS brake lines, and oil change on the Lotus!!!! This was the first time we have done any mechanical work on a car together .... we "wash" it often. Ok its more like a water fight with a car in the middle but ... you get the idea.

Attached are some photos .... just wanted to share our newest entry into the "car guy club"!!! :biggrin:biggrin:biggrin:biggrin:biggrin

I am sooooooo proud. :thumbsup

start em early

I got my first car, a model T ford, when I was twelve years old. I restored it during junior high and early high school years before I started SCCA solo II at 16. My youngest son was helping me R&R VW motors when he was 5. He was racing a GT1 Vette at 16. I have shared many really good car experiences with my sons through the years. And yes I "ruined" them early on so they are car guys too. Thats one of the things I did right! The whole father and son thing is awesome. Thanks for sharing the pics!

I had to bribe him into bed with the comment .... if your good and go to sleep real quick .... we can change the oil in the GT tomorrow! :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

He flipped over and is doing his "fake sleep" thing. :biggrin:biggrin

I think I activated his car gene in a big way!!!! of course he only has about 500 hot wheels. hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!! well at least he comes by it honestly.

I'm guessing your boy's 6. My two are 9 and 11. It just keeps getting better as they get older.

Seeing those pictures reminds me when I was about that age, my dad started me working on cars. He did most of the work and I helped. Today, he is almost 70 years old and he is still envolved in the car hobby having several cars. There has been a complete change, I do most of the work and now he watches. Those are life long memories in the cycle of life.

Thats the cycle that I am hopeful to have with my kid (kids if God is willing). I always enjoyed doing things with my dad even though he is not a car guy. But he is a wicked carpenter ... which has also come in handy many many times in my life.

Its the time we spend with those we love that should be savored. I did not realize that until fairly recently. I will never underestimate that or neglect it again. Instead of being irritable, tense and worrisome leaving the ones that I love only to see what they see, which in my case is not what I felt inside. Those extra hours spent working or fretting over something that at the end was unimportant should have been wisely, calmly invested into the ones that I deeply love. So they would know the depth of that love with out a doubt and then be empowered it. Maybe sometimes life is as much about admitting your wrong as it is about trying to do right.

Cr@p! Now I am rambling, thank you for your comments about your memories with your dad. I am hopeful that Stephen will feel the same in 30 years.
