Roger that on stock market timing, Gary. Story of my life!
To be honest, I thought Mulally had the potential to be a huge mistake for Ford. ( Sort of like my stock timing skills. ) Very glad I was wrong. He had a lot of balls to pull some major changes off, and the company is much better off for his efforts.
I still can't understand how Ford managed to not make any success out of Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin et al. There should have been something there. However, it appears that there was some technology acquired/further developed, such as in uses of aluminum in mass volume applications, that may continue to pay off for Ford. Let's hope so.
Speaking of paying off, Mulally certainly hasn't done to badly for himself, has he?
It will be interesting to see if Fields can keep the momentum behind the "cultural changes" at Ford, or whether the old silo mentalities will creep out of the woodwork. One direction is good, the other is potential disaster.
We also need to recognize Billy Ford for having the foresight and fortitude to step aside; go " out of the box " with his selection of Mulally; and sticking with him through some really tough times. There must have been some interesting dinner table conversations in Grosse Point during those times!
