So do you really have to remove the rear bonnet (lid) to remove the stock muffler? :confused

It would certainly be easier however you dont have to. I was able to lift mine right out after removing the air filter assembly, rear bumper and the black screen panel,s above the rear difuser. It,s heavy and a helping hand is recomended, I covered up everything in the area with two layers of moveing blankets, removed all of the hardwear that holds the muffler in place, sat on the supercharger and lifted it right out without any problem at all.I was doing a rear bumper delete at the same time so all that other stuff had to come off anyway. Had i not had everything out if the way it would have been much more trouble.:cheers

The clam shell is easily removed if you have three people. Takes 10 minutes tops.

Thanks guys. I have my 2 brother in laws (Darrel and Darrel)coming over tonight, so if they seem sober enough I'll get them to help.

Just a few little tips

Have a blanket or? already prepared to set the clamshell on and then;

1. Mask the edges of the clamshell and the leading/upper edge of the body
2. Unplug the electrical plug on the driver side
3. Remove the clips and then plan use a small pair of vise grips to grab the pins
4. Loosen the strut/shock clip so as to make them ready to be popped off
5. With one person on both sides (this would be a luxury as I do with only two of us) reach in-between one of them and pop the strut off and then slide the pin out; repeat the process on the other side and then the clamshell does NOT lift up but rather it must first be lowered a bit and then it slides forward easy and then up.

Installation

1. Have the clips fully re-positioned on the struts/shocks
2. Have the pins ready on both sides
3. Set the clamshell back into position remembering that it has to be lowered a bit and then it slides into the hinge assembly easy
4. Insert one pin and pop the strut/shock in position
5. Insert final pin and pop the strut/shock in position
6. Plug in electrical connector

Remove tape and smile

Now having shared this and so as to answer your specific question; yes the OEM muffler can be removed without removing the clamshell; I made a post about it long ago.

:shrug I thought the bonnet referred to the front compartment? If this is the case I am not surprised you did this without removing the bonnet.

Well I removed the rear lid with the help of my 2 bro in laws (Darrel and Darrel). Kept them away from my booze until complete. All went well and Shadowman I wished I had read your post before doing it. It took a minute to figure out about lowering it to remove it from the hinges. Got your speaker box and moving forward on it. Kumar notice anything about the exhausts?

Well everything has been removed that would help extracting the muffler and still it is hitting the rear transaxle housing. I noticed on the Accufab website they noted that sometimes you might need to drop that transaxle a few inches to gain clearance. Has anyone done this to gain clearance? :confused

Once; however in all other cases placing the shifter in the down postion and forward allowed it to eek by.

Now did you remove the bumper and the two screens?

If you read my post from long ago I state that you need to use a blanket or ? to wrap the can and then make sure to place painters tape along the inside edge of the rear facsia and the when you bring the muffler out it will slide pass the rear facsia and in some cases will have contact however with the blanket it will slide past with NO damage and then once it is resting on top of the transaxle you are golden.

FYI I always push up rather than pull up during the intial phase and certainly I have done it several time as such I know what to expect and yet rest assurd it will come out.

Now if you elect to lower the transaxle; it is easy. Place a floor jack under the rear of the transaxle and then remove the one large bolt afterwhich the back of it can be lowered an 1" or so with no issues just be certain to properly torque that bolt once back in place.

Let me know what else I can do

I didn't have to do that. I think the reason it was so easy for me was because i had everything on the tail end removed, { bumper, screens ,} ect...
Mine came out without scratching anything,or cutting anything. You will want to be patient and carefully wiggle it out so nothing is damaged in the process.
Takeing off a few extra things will help im sure. Take your time, i know it can be done because i managed it solo.:cheers

Thanks guys. I took everything (bumper, lower screen, etc.) off. The upper screen appears to be pop riveted onto the upper rear panel. Not sure how to remove that. I think dropping the trans would give me all the clearance I need. Everything has been properly protected.

The upper screen as two small sheet metal screws in towards the middle of the upper edge and then a Torx and each sie; it comes out easy

John, this upper screen is your problem. I've removed more than 20 OEM mufflers and every one of them has come out without touching the transaxle. (I think this is Shadowman's experience as well except for a rare case.) Anyway, that rear screen is the key and needs to come off.

Remove the license plate and work through the license plate hole. The two sheetmetal screws are Phillip Heads and you will need a right angle screwdriver. Just be patient and you will get them out. The other two screws are the standard T27 Torx that screw this plate to the frame horns. Before undoing these torx screws, put a couple of strips of blue tape on the frame horns so that this panel won't scratch them when you lift it out.

Once this upper panel is removed, make sure you have all the tape in place and blankets on top of the engine. Position a strong person on each side. My experience is that the drivers side will scoot forward and rotate out first, followed by the passenger side.

I really doubt that you will need to drop the transaxle if you follow the procedure above.

John,

If you need a hand please give me a call. I am in Humble and sounds like a good excuse to drive the GT somewhere. Plus I was a day slow on Kumars pipes, now I know who got them. I would love to here them once running.
