More power to be pulled from the little engine that could?

After following many threads on the forum about mods to the 3.5 to increase horsepower, I’d like to share Ken Block’s Instagram posts about his “tweaked” 3.5 GT ecoboost engine. This is an interesting test bed to see how it holds up under the abuse.
Maybe some of you HP junkies can take notes for your own future mods.
Enjoy!

There is always more power to be had. The real question is, for how long? He has a sponsor with deep pockets.

Interesting for sure. Front installation makes cooling a bit easier, there should be enough air in. I guess with the NFGT the cooling capacity of the existing holes in the chassis for engine, water cooler and intercooler is quite optimized with little headroom left (car was designed for Le Mans so the Team knew restrictions ahead). And last there is the powertrain question, I guess this car is AWD and the tranny is probably build for it. I wonder how many miles that build has to withstand its abuse. But I guess an overhaul here and then doesn't hurt much.

An exhaust and tune should get you there.

This is a motor straight out of the daytona prototype program. Roush yates are specifically tuning it and are keeping a very close eye on it, as it is straight out of that program. btw it make 900hp with only 15lbs of boost.

The heck with the power upgrades. Which one of you NFGT owners will be the first to add a truck bed?

That would look pretty mean sticking out of a new GT engine bay.

Paul, I completely agree. If a new FGT owner has deep pockets and is not looking to Ford to support any engine warranty claims, have at the modifications.

This new 3.5L V6 is NOTHING like the 5.4 V8 in the 05-06 and will not tolerate the multiple engine modifications the early cars took on. Definitely modifier beware in this scenario. And it WILL be costly when things go South.

Does anyone know outside of the custom tune how different is the engine in the race car vs the street car? Internals, turbos ect. I know most have said it’s not safe pushing mire power out of the car but something tells me with down pipes and a nice tune the GT should make a lot more safe HP. Please come in.

The racecar is restricted compared to the street car.

This is proprietary information. Ford/Roush/Ganassi don't want you to know. Waste of time to speculate.

It is easy, just pull the engine, send it to Doug Yates and have him install forged Mahle pistons, a Sonny Bryant crank, Carrillo rods, E85 capable injectors and fuel system, larger turbo's, Motec ECU with a good tune, then put an Xtract gear box in and kiss your warranty goodbye.

I have heard that this engine is running quite close to the edge...that there's not much room left...

Don't know how true that is...

How about switching to a K&N air filter?
