OMG. That is awesome. The car is awesome but the price is set by one seller and two (or more) buyers that really want it.

I always thought only a matter of time before the most collectible cars starting being priced like the most collectible paintings.
If you think about it, some Ferraris or Mercedes are much rarer than Van Goghs, Picassos and the likes.
Not to mention, you can enter a lot of events with them like Concours or vintage tours, all of which may be more engaging than hanging on one's wall.

While painting and art in general can bring satisfaction, with a car as fine as this you can always find something else to marvel at. Just open the bonnet.

A woman that lived in my area paid Andy Warhol to do a self-portrait about fifty years ago. She paid him $1,600. That painting sold in 2011 for $38.7 million.

The Christies contemporary auction in November was a $400 million blitz. If you like racing you've probably seen Jeff Koons' BMW art car. He had a piece go at that auction for $33.6 million. Not bad for a living contemporary American artist.

Cars have a long, long way to go before they are even in the same galaxy as art. The roster of artists that bring 8 figures is very deep, and the list of 9 figure works is expanding rapidly with the explosion of wealth in Asia and the Middle East. If someone paid $250+ million for The Card Players, how do you even attach a value to the Mona Lisa? Wild.

Certainly art has had more upside in ridiculous resale, but I still would spend my money on what is really important to me. Mechanical art. :biggrin We have a house in Santa Fe New Mexico and there is certainly plenty of art to spend your money on, but for me it's a conversation piece in the end. You can easily spend $100k on a rug. Just not me.

Rugs are out of control now too. :lol Sotheby's sold a rug last month for $33.7 million. Against that kind of insanity, $31 million for any highly valued car seems cheap.

I remember someone on the forum was selling a Warhol screenprint at one point because they were going to pick up another GT. Wouldn't have done too bad either way!

Great video of two great champions!! Fangio came into the 1962 Le Mans winner pit and shook everyone's hand - including mine!! What a thrill

Here's a picture I took of Brabham in 1962 at Monaco in a Cooper Climax F1 car -

Thought of this thread after the Christies contemporary auction. A Francis Bacon triptych sold for $142 million. $142,000,000! Wow. New Warhol record as well at $105 million.

That is a bunch of money. Total auction was nearly $700 million.

If I live to be 200 I won't understand this:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-13/koons-s-puppy-sets-58-million-record-for-living-artist.html

It's a f*&%ing balloon dog (even if it is crafted out of steel). $58MM!!!
