Proof ugly won't sell

http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/2011/11/26/daimler-is-scrapping-its-slow-selling-maybach-brand/

It's amazing....30s Maybach actually had a grill design that's close to Rolls/bentley

Slap that on a high belt line stocky car with round porthole lights and u would have sold 1000s

Instead thy went with soap bar/suburbian style and were outsold 10x by Bentley

Same with Phaeton and porky Jetta style

Lutz was right, ugly don't sell

Not surprising, since I always viewed them as a over priced glorified S class.

Many industry experts also said the Maybach’s design lacked distinction from the S-Class, whose platform and much of its technology it shares...

They ran out of NBA players and Hip Hop artists who want them.

It might be dead, but it was never really live. The must have factor never materialized. I've seen a few of them on the road, they have no presence, if you want to make a "statement", the Bentley/Rolls are much better choices.

Drove AMG SLS Roadster today, very very impressive to drive. Not sure about the looks. Maybach is also impressive, but the looks are even worse.

It reads like someone describing a Nissan GT-R. :lol

I think the whole concept of the Maybach was to be driven in by a Chauffeur and a lot less about the "Car Experience". As far as the executive ergonomics, features, privacy, recliner etc goes, the Maybach had an outstanding offering. If you were an executive who had to be in the back seat for one reason or another, then your options would have been limited to RR, Bentley, Maybach or a Limo and no one does Limos anymore.

In any event, I think as far as the US market goes it was intended mostly for the NY SoHo and Wall Street types and we all know those guys could not predict their own market crash.

They had great success building engines for German tanks during WW2 though!

I think the SLS looks better as a vert.

Having said that, even tho I like it and I generally like long hoods. This car's nose is a bit too long. Much better than the The Mclaren SL from a couple years ago tho.

They are using classic boat proportions on these models. It is sacrilege I know, but it is a bit overwrought.

“It would not be sensible to develop a successor model for the current Maybach,” Mr. Zetsche said... In their place, Daimler would work to add more luxurious vehicles based on its Mercedes-Benz division’s S-Class sedan.

Took long enough to recognize their mistake!

SLS engine is fantastic. The sound, the auto blip on downshift, the steering is great, chassis feels planted but just slippery enough. The mechanicals are truly great. Interior is very comfortable. Build quality is as good as it gets. The looks are so so. And for a fully decked out one with all the carbon goodies, best wheels, adjustable suspension, etc. it is almost the same as a 458 or an MP412C. That's the problem. Again, like the Maybach, nobody can argue that it's not a great car, it's just what you can get for the same money somewhere else that's the problem. I've got it, the SLS is the very best soft core porn which I like a lot, but it's not Angelina damn it.
