Manual trunk latch and burning oil smell

I finally got a chance to go for a short drive, but on the way back it started to rain again. I car is so tame if you don't push it. The ground is all wet around here. When the road dries out I will find the beast from within. My tranny shifts without any problems even when cold. Cold = ~55F.

I have got two questions:

1. My manual trunk latch doesn't seem to be working. I turn the key and lift the lever, but nothing happens. How high can you lift the lever. I am pulling it pretty hard and it goes up about 40 degrees. The trunk opens OK with the key fob.

2. I have the smell of burning oil in the engine compartment when the engine warms up. I stinks up the whole garage. I smell like oil burning up on the exhuast mainifolds. I hope it is just oil someone dripped on the engine and not an oil leak. Anyone else smell burning oil

Also I show up as Team Member not GT Owner. What is a Team Member vs. GT Owner?

BlackIce, I think DBK can sort your GT Owner tag...

It sounds like the cabling needs tightening very slightly on your hood/trunk release lever. I don't know if this is easy for you to do or if it will need to go to a dealer.

No burning oil smell on mine - does the engine look clean? Where is your oil level?

From what I can see from the top the engine looks clean. The oil level cold is about in the middle between the high and low mark.

Have you measured the oil hot? The routine on the GT is when the engine is hot after a drive, park on a level surface, leave the engine running, open the clamshell and prepare yourself (!) nip around to the drivers side, turn off engine, give it a few seconds and then measure the oil. Measuring it cold won't give you (on a GT) an accurate measure.

Even if the oil level was too high, it should vent (I'm guessing) under the car somewhere cold.... so I'm not sure why a burning oil smell would be.

However, check the oil hot and let's see where your level is.

My car stinks when hot, I only have been able to drive it 450 miles (up in the NE). I would consider this to be perfectly normal. Just the good old "new car" smell......

Your trunk lid is not normal, should be easy to open. Don't force it, just have the dealer take a look when you have time.

As for a burning oil smell, some smell is normal for any new car, but I think there is a distinct difference between new car smell and burning oil on a hot exhaust. I remember mine being pretty smelly the first week, but it didn't smell like oil on an exhaust.

Mine shifted perfect for the fist several hundred miles, then started to be cranky in the morning.

BlackIce,

Great to hear you were able to go for a drive. I'm not sure what city you're in but, Walnut Creek Ford as worked on about 3-4 GTs. I know one of the GT owners and they were pleased with them.

My new GT smelled hot for a few days, no oily smell. Look underneath at the exhaust, is it possible you picked up one of those little plastic bags from the store when the exhaust was hot? I have run over one of those before and it instantly sticks to the exhaust and really stinks.

Good luck on your new GT...what an amazing car!

BlackIce,
My hood/trunk acts somewhat the same. I just have to hold the silver handle up with my right hand while reaching over with my left and opening the hood. It doesn't stick, just doesn't "pop" up.
No smells from oil, just from the driver!!! :eek
Used to live in Napa (3 times). Love that area of the country. Will be out later this month on business.

Mine smelled the first week as well and then again after the Borla was installed. The smell from the Borla did have a oil flavor to it. Infact it was noticeable even at red lights with the window down.

Thanks for all of the information. The smell has gone away, but the latch still doesn't work. I tried the tip to pull up on the trunk as one lifts the lever. Does anyone have a recommendation on which dealer to use to service my car? I am in San Mateo County of CA. I would hate to have the car come back worst than when it went too the dealer.

have you tried adjusting the rubber bump stops?
there are 2, one on each side. they just screw in and out. from the symptoms, yours might be too low.

i had to adjust mine out a little for the trunk latch to work properly.

just a suggestion.

btw, i'm in the bay area as well, let me know if you find a good ford dealer to work on these things.

Serramonte Ford in Colma had 2 GTs, haven't head if they'd serviced any. Frontier Ford in the San Jose sells and services Roush and Saleen vehicles.

Hope this helps.

This is a list of certified tech from the out of state dealer that I bought the car from.

Here are the area dealers with technicians completing Ford GT training since 2005.

Towne Ford Sales Redwood City 4
The Ford Store San Leandro 3
S & C Ford San Francisco 3
Hayward Ford Hayward 2
Serramonte Ford Colma 1
University Ford Palo Alto/Menlo Pk 1

But note that these are the number of techs getting GT training. They may not be working there any longer. I am looking for someone who has some experience getting their car serviced.
