Living in So-Cal

Something else to consider about SoCal. No matter what exclusive "Zip Code" you pick to live in, there is crime and trash within 15 miles.

Isn't that the case everywhere?

San Clemente is very nice. I have been there since '65. President Nixon selected the town for his western white house due to the excellent climate. It's the southmost city in Orange County and it's a one hour drive to San Diego.

True of anywhere, but here in Southern California some places have far less crime, and the trash is dramatically less, i.e. South Coastal Orange County. Murder rate in South Orange County is more than 10 times less than areas closer to Los Angeles County and other Southern California Counties.

Santa Ana (OC) is the Murder Capital of SoCal and really is no different than East Los Angeles IMO. No matter where you live in SoCal, there are tradeoffs - Traffic, Quality of Schools, Family Values, Home & Property Tax Values etc. Each and every neighborhood has its pluses and minuses. When my kids are grown up, I am moving to Cambria or Hawaii, perhaps Idaho if SteveA will let me build in his backyard. BTW Steve, why did you leave OC?

What about Wyoming? You could be in the exclusive GT owners group, ( 2 including myself) only 1000 miles from the ocean and freeze your ass off in winter!!!! Just think all this and no weather tax.

Good luck with the hunt

I think everyone should spend part of their life in a cold weather climate. It makes you appreciate the warm weather one. I'm fortunate that I did the cold weather thing early in life. I'm aging my bones in year round sunshine now.

Nice try Sam, I'm staying out of this besides I'm late for the local Idaho Republican Party Meeting.

As a fellow Canadian living in the United States I’d suggest that you may want to check into the tax implications of spending six months per year in the United States. It will likely make you subject to U.S. taxes and thus, I believe, you would have to pay the higher of U.S. taxes on your income or the taxes due in your country of residence. Historically this has not been a problem for Canadians as taxes have always been higher in Canada but things have changed/are changing.

You’ll want to avoid hitting the IRS’s “substantial presence test” to ensure you stay out of the U.S. tax net.

Many of the smaller cities around Los Angeles and the Inland Empire (Compton, etc.) have dramatically higher violent and other crime rates than Santa Ana. Not to mention Los Angeles and Riverside as a whole. Irvine has been one of the safest ciites per capita in the Unted States for decades. The cities south of Irvine also have extremely low crime rates per capita; Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, and the other ciites of South Orange County have very low crime rates by comparison to Los Angeles, Riverside Counties. The further you get away from L.A. and Riverside the crime rates drop dramatically.

You may want to consider Lajolla and Del Mar in San Diego. Less traffic, great car culture, orange county is 45 mins away.
