Something else to consider about SoCal. No matter what exclusive "Zip Code" you pick to live in, there is crime and trash within 15 miles.
Isn't that the case everywhere?

True of anywhere, but here in Southern California some places have far less crime, and the trash is dramatically less, i.e. South Coastal Orange County. Murder rate in South Orange County is more than 10 times less than areas closer to Los Angeles County and other Southern California Counties.
Santa Ana (OC) is the Murder Capital of SoCal and really is no different than East Los Angeles IMO. No matter where you live in SoCal, there are tradeoffs - Traffic, Quality of Schools, Family Values, Home & Property Tax Values etc. Each and every neighborhood has its pluses and minuses. When my kids are grown up, I am moving to Cambria or Hawaii, perhaps Idaho if SteveA will let me build in his backyard. BTW Steve, why did you leave OC?

Many of the smaller cities around Los Angeles and the Inland Empire (Compton, etc.) have dramatically higher violent and other crime rates than Santa Ana. Not to mention Los Angeles and Riverside as a whole. Irvine has been one of the safest ciites per capita in the Unted States for decades. The cities south of Irvine also have extremely low crime rates per capita; Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, and the other ciites of South Orange County have very low crime rates by comparison to Los Angeles, Riverside Counties. The further you get away from L.A. and Riverside the crime rates drop dramatically.

Like I said, its all about trade-offs.
