crank

The SC belt shred from a few weeks ago turned out to be my crank giving up the fight. So I guess the next time you have a mixed drink you can do like the brothers do and pour some out for my crank. lol

Good news is I get to put something better in it (and a big fat repair bill) and then beat the crap out of that one.

I will miss the upcoming Texas Mile in my GT but might run it in my 88 IROC or my scooter or even my RV, I gotta run SOMETHING :lol (hey Ray I'd be happy to blast one of your "normal" TT's down the track).

Oh, and I'm getting the broken crank back and hanging it from my rafters in my warehouse next to Lindsay Lohan's fender from her wrecked Mercedes. :biggrin

Wanna Compare BROKEN CRANKS:) Cause I got one that will go right with yours. 20lbs factory balencer+factory single keyway and 33lbs of boost dyno pulls only=Failed Crank..............................................I had actually pulled the motor out of my car to put cnc'd heads, different cams and a innovators west balencer on it with a pinning kit they made me and found my key to be bad from just dynoing my car. Not even driving it on the street. Needless to say it wrecked the balencer and the crank. Stock cranks are cheap though. Like 409.00 my cost, so it will be a easy fix for this turd motor. I got 2 billet cranks and 2 darton blocks sit'n here ready to be molested together:)

Good Luck with the rebuild.

Daaaang. Yep had a Innovators balancer ready to go but keyway was walloded (how is that spelled) out and ooops the crank is broken.....bummer.

Are stock cranks really that cheap? Geez.

Can you pm me the places you know that make cranks (that don't break on the dyno)?

Sorry to hear that Mullet. I'm sure it will be better, faster, stronger when you are done. Then you can come over to the left coast and run the rejuvinated puppy at altitude in Mojave. That sea level stuff is for sissies! LOL!!!

R.I.P. and pics of the destruction please. BMF do you have a pic of the pinning kit they made you? I remember when I had my viper that ROE Racing would sell a pinning kit you could install with out having to pull the motor or the crank.

If there were a bunch of whipple cars making 20+lbs of boost we would see more failures due to the wieght of the factory balancer. There is a reason Ford went with a 10lb lighter balancer with the 08 gt500's. Because the 07's shared the same balancer as the GT Supercar and like it or not its a problem. I would bet an undetermined amount of money had the GT gone in production into 08 there would of been a change with them too. Now as discussed before in these balancer/crank threads 95% of GT owners will never have a problem but there will be 5% that will as these cars are pushed.

Like I said my failure came from dyno time only. 17pulls. If I would of had this thing tuned, I would bet in 1 mile pass it would of broke. But then again I am doing something NO one esle has done with a blower on one......

Also the factory crank would be better but it only has a half moon key where as aftermarket cranks have a full key way. So the actual keyway on a GT crank looks like a T so to say but with half a moon in the middle of it. Were it T's out there is no support from the crank only from the keyway its self. Then being the snout on one of these cranks is only a hair over an inch long, there is just not enough support for the xtra stress the aftermarket stuff does to it. This isn't a problem just with the GT motor either. Its a problem with ALL mod motors from 93 to present.

When I had my billet cranks made, we double keyed them full length and then also I had them make the snouts 1'' longer for more keyway support. Then innovators made me custom hubs for the balancers that were longer.

Here is pics of the keyway. You can't actually see it but it pushed the metal of the crank up when the keyway twisted.

Mullet,

Sorry to hear about your crank issues. What blower and boost combination were you running? Could you please post pictures of your keyway when you get a chance?

Best Regards,
Waldo

What blower and boost combination were you running?

I think Mullet (please correct if I am wrong) had the OEM supercharger and OEM pulley. However, he was force-feeding the blower a boatload of pressure from twin turbos. We're probably gonna need someone like INDY to help us out with the calculations, but work-wise that SC was doing a lot. In OEM configuration, the SC's task is to take atmospheric pressure up to a measured 10-12psi. In the TT+SC set-up, the SC is being "fed" 20+ psi form the turbos and then it is cranking the net up to 25-29psi that the engine sees. From a work perspective, the SC is doing a lot more than it would in an OEM application, so I wouldn't worry at all if I was OEM (or OEM + pulley).

Yes stock SC and stock SC pulley. This is the only combo that makes peak hp.

Believe it or not I might go TT only after the rebuild to get more peak hp. Apollo is in my sights. :)

Colvin automotive in Austin has an upgraded lower pulley that extends further onto the crank. It also has an additional key and the keys are longer. They have the details on crank machining. They had a problem with a lower running 18 plus on their whipple.
