For another teaser, the D700 is in my opinion the best digital camera for the money. It uses the same sensor as the D3x, but in the more traditional 35mm form factor. The D3x weighs about 1-2lb more, is physically taller (think of the old Nikon F4 - the size of the D700 body - vs. the F4 with the motor drive and battery pack attached - the D3x. Huge difference with little value to the features of the D3x over the D700 for the extra weight. Heck I don't even use most of the features of the D700 and often shoot with the frame display off (you didn't get preview on the F2 with film did you?)
The great thing about the sensor in the D700/D3x besides being full frame 35mm size (~24x36mm) is that at 10megapixels each sensor in the matrix is HUGE. The gain (literally, in the analog sense) from that is a dynamic range that goes from <100 to >6400 ISO equivalent with absolutely no digital noise. It is a truly wonderful camera for shooting natural light hand held in almost all conditions, especially band concerts or shows with only stage lighting.
But that's another story too...
