It was only a matter of time. Frankly I am surprised it took this long.

Not surprising, Polaroid died long ago too.

"The company, for instance, invented the digital camera—in 1975—but never managed to capitalize on the new technology."

:frown

Agreed, very sad.

A last bit of Kodak Kodachrome!

Kodachrome died about a year ago when the last roll was processed. They had stopped manufacturing in 2009.

I'm on a serious scanning project of all my negatives and slides (estimate ~40000 images). I'm mostly done with slides, and let me tell you the difference between 40 year old Ektachrome and 40 year old Kodachrome is night and day. The Kodachrome looks like it was taken yesterday.

It has taken me a year to get this far and I'm definitely less than half way. Negatives take a lot more work than slides too.

They still manufacture some film, mostly for professionals. I used to shoot the pro negative (whatever Vericolor became, it's been so long I can't even remember) for stuff I cared about because its grain structure was so tight (almost like Kodachrome) and could get better or bigger enlargements. Alot of mine was medium format (6cm x 6cm). I've since given in to technology and completed the "digital" transition with the D700 (and with a new D300s as a backup body).

Would you mind sharing what you using to scan the slides? I am assuming you are NOT using a typical scanner/printer. Are you using any particular software for image enhancement.

Thank you in advance.

Ah, I just replied to the PM, but saw you already asked here. This would really pull this particular thread off topic so I'll start another topic. It took a long time to put this system and workflow together so anyone wanting to do a similar project would benefit... I probably won't get to it until tomorrow.

The basic ingredient is a Coolscan 9000 but that's just the beginning. There is some wheat flour and yeast and other goodies to add to the recipe before you have the full loaf of bread.

For another teaser, the D700 is in my opinion the best digital camera for the money. It uses the same sensor as the D3x, but in the more traditional 35mm form factor. The D3x weighs about 1-2lb more, is physically taller (think of the old Nikon F4 - the size of the D700 body - vs. the F4 with the motor drive and battery pack attached - the D3x. Huge difference with little value to the features of the D3x over the D700 for the extra weight. Heck I don't even use most of the features of the D700 and often shoot with the frame display off (you didn't get preview on the F2 with film did you?)

The great thing about the sensor in the D700/D3x besides being full frame 35mm size (~24x36mm) is that at 10megapixels each sensor in the matrix is HUGE. The gain (literally, in the analog sense) from that is a dynamic range that goes from <100 to >6400 ISO equivalent with absolutely no digital noise. It is a truly wonderful camera for shooting natural light hand held in almost all conditions, especially band concerts or shows with only stage lighting.

But that's another story too...

I thoroughly agree with you, but I am going to wait it out one more iteration until they deliver true 1080i video capability...............though video is VERY low on my list of requirements.

My old backup body died and I could get a new one cheaper than repairing it so I got the D300s. It was more motivated by compatibility. There are a few newer bodies that have more megapixels but the D300s can use the same battery pack and Compact Flash cards as the D700. But the D300s also does video but only HD 1280x720. Almost all of the other bodies list HD up to 1920x1080, some at 30fps... I'm not a video guru so don't know if that means 1080i.

I'm also a Nikon fan because I locked my self on their lenses almost 40 years ago, and don't want to go invest in new glass. I think the newer Canons actually seem to have better color saturation than Nikon and would seriously consider one in the D700 class (I don't know what that would be) if you didn't have a lens collection to preserve.

It's a component of 1080i.

I too started into Nikon lenses around 1972 when I purchased my first F2.

Holy cow, take a look at this:

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7799914638/nikon-d4-overview/

$6K, available in February. The specs are awesome, but I still have the problem of size and weight, and can only hope there will be a D800 (if it isn't already taken)

Scanner writeup later this weekend.

End of a Legendary Era that is for sure. Sad!

In the day that would have been called a medium format. It had several dimensions (in centimeters) 6x6, 6x7 and 6x4.5. The Mamayia 645 was one of the most common. Most of mine are 6x6 (Hasselblad format). More on the other topic which I promise I will do but the Broncos won and I'm cooking cow.

Good for you. Excellent game!

They played a really good game. Tebow finally got over throwing the ball, and got a couple of Hail Mary passes to boot.

This has to be the Broncos' new theme song:

Now back to our regularly scheduled photo topic.
