:lol

Jamal Hameedi has a dream.

As if he’s not already living in one.

The chief engineer of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), Jamal heads up a sort of skunkworks hidden in the depths of Dearborn that turns out the highest performance cars and trucks the company makes.

Those orange, flying F-150 Raptors? Yea, that was him.

The 2013 Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 coupe and its 200 mph top speed? SVT’s hands are all over that one, too.

“We can do anything. Really, there’s no car in the Ford lineup that we couldn’t take a very novel and innovative approach to,” Hameedi tells FoxNews.com

Even economy cars are not safe, as evidenced by the upcoming turbocharged Focus ST hot hatchback that SVT had more than a little involvement in.

But while that’s all well and good, what Jamal really wants to build is a supercar.

“My first car that I worked on at SVT was the Ford GT. So, me personally, I would love to do another car like that,” he says.

The 2005-2006 GT was a 550 hp two-seat coupe inspired by Ford’s 24 Hours of LeMans-winning race cars of the 1960s, and the first American production car with a top speed of over 200 mph -- 205 mph to be exact.

Over two years Ford built 4038 of the $150,000 GTs, which were more than a match for the competition of the day from Europe, not to mention the Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvette. But after the run was completed, plans for a successor hit a dead end…or did they?

When asked about it recently by Automobile Magazine, Ford’s global product chief, Derrick Kuzak, hinted that just such a car could be in the works, but wouldn’t quite go there.

Still, with new cars being produced by performance divisions like Chrysler’s SRT and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG -- both analogues of SVT – the idea of a GT successor is far from far-fetched.

Unfortunately for sports car fans, Hameedi assures us that his dream is just that. Although it is one that the guy with his name on the cars could make come true.

(Bill, are you listening?)

Then again, Jamal does work for a secret service, and loose lips can sink supercars, too.

Yeah, because a 650 hp/200 mph Mustang that avoids gas guzzler tax while running a DOHC plasma-coated 5.8L with cylinder pressures nearly high at cylinder temps nearly as hot as a GTDI motor is waaaay old school. :lol

That Mustang will not only beat the ass off 90% of the cars those companies build, it will also whoop the ass off a Ford GT.

Re-purchase remaining 80% of A-M. Return on Invested Capital > than re-boot Lincoln brand.

And next FGT/Halocar = Hybrid performance car @ volumes of 10K year.

Ford is buying back AM ? Sounds very indecisive

Car makers should forget hybrids & make cars that run on natural gas, its THE energy of the future for America

That quote from Derrick was taken out of context and wishfully applied to Ford GT. They are not building a new Ford GT. Period.

It is the rumor that will not die. It cracks me up because one of the times they ran with it, the trigger for the reporting was an off-the-cuff comment about an idea for a future version of a compact hatchback. Somehow they translated that into there's a new hybrid Ford GT coming. :lol

There are people that think they should do another sports car. There are people that want to do another sports car. Those two things are a long way off from "Here's $180,000,000. Go pull a bunch of talent from core products and do it."

I really think they should do another Ford sports car. Why not? They've got a bunch of kick ass engines. They want to show off their technological proficiency. The GR-1 is years old at this point and it's still one of the best looking cars on the planet. They could sell 5,000 $100k Cobra roadsters a year no problem (with one of the other designs that was WAY better looking than the J Mays teutonic bath tub version). Or just go nuts and do something new.

Kuzak's replacement Raj Nair is a gearhead. He used to run in Formula Ford and Formula 2000. Jost Capito used to run Porsche Motorsports and then was in charge of the Sauber F1 team. You know Jamal is down for it. Jim Farley is a big car nut. It seems like with that many guys interested in speed, they could get it done.
