How NOT to do an axle shaft flange upgrade

One of my friend's GT was suffering from a trans axle output shaft seal leak.
A simple fix, (although somewhat expensive). Jump in the truck, drive to Phoenix, knock it out in a few hours, head home.
Imagine my surprise when the half shaft flange came off in my hand. Upon further dissection, this is what I found. (attached picture)
My friend bought the car used, and was assured that the axle shaft mod was done. Done by whom? I guess by some one who should not even own a wrench.
They basically removed the stock flange bolts, drilled holes in them, and then lock wired them. It doesn't work that way.
I'm shocked that my friend was able to drive the car, and even more surprised when he said he had driven it to over 200 mph. I could only imagine the carnage that could have resulted had the shaft came off at 200.
A word of advice here. If your GT has not had the mod done, spend the bucks for the new bolts, and have a pro do the job. :)thumbsup The GT Guys or Me LOL) It could save you a lot of grief.

You don't say what year the car is. That's an updated (black/hardened) washer that was on later cars and which was supplied as Ford's first attempt at a fix when the washer was thought to be the culprit.

The car is an fairly early 06. (built Dec of 2005) It was built about the time the rep from Recardo and I were replacing the bolts and washers on every trans and car at Wixom, thus explaining the later style washer. (good eye buddy) I remember dumping a whole box of old bolts and washers in the dumpster.

Hey! The company that makes that wire should advertise "guaranteed to 200 mph!"

That was a very lucky leak for me. I drive the black beast hard, and torrie has her putting down 715 rwhp..

Just plain old good luck kept that one together.

I think it was Indy GT and his sidekick StormCat that advised wiring the bolts.
