Help with an annoying noise

I have an annoying squeak or CREAK that sounds like it is coming from behind the passenger's head in the rear bulkhead. It's quite loud and happens whenever the car hits a bump that causes the chassis to twist. Happens most often under a diagonal load, like hitting a small pot hole on one side, or when you enter the driveway at a angle. It almost sounds like the bulkhead glass is going crack.

I've eliminated the clam as the source of the problem. I popped the clam and drove slowly and still heard the creaking/crack sound. The passenger seat is not touching the glass.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Dan

I had a small annoying noise that would happen constantly every time the engine "changed" position when slightly accelerating and when depressing the clutch or taking the foot off the accelerator. It was buildup of debris collected over time caught between the backmost engine cover and the transaxle case. And, there have been other rattles caused by the collection of feed corn deposited by rodents behind the front wheel center spindle covers, in the clanmshell, in the airbox, and along the sides of the engine covers front to back.

As none of this ever affected driving, I typically ignore it, keep driving, and get to it during oil changes; about 4 a year.

Good luck.

Have you tried moving the seats forward an inch? My drivers seat creaks (not touching the glass either), but moved forward, it doesn't.

Be certain that the belly pans and bolts holding them in place are tight.

I had the same type of sounds, drove me crazy for a couple of hundred miles.:thumbsdow

Now all I hear are the exhaust pipes playing their sweet sweet music.:thumbsup

Air box

Its your air cleaner box housing; if its not seated correctly it squeaks.

It creates a high pitched squeak that can be heard in the cabin.

My SVT tech narrowed it down, and its been silent since.

It though it was the chassis, clam shell, pans, etc; but he knew it was the air box.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm pretty sure it's not the belly pans, I've heard that noise before. I'm glad it isn't rodent deposits! I'll try moving the seats but the leading contender so far is the airbox.. Seems like it would have to be a horrendous noise to get thru the glass as loud as it is...

Keep the ideas coming. Is there anything in the roof structure or the clam latch mechanism, or bulkhead glass mounting that could make a noise?

Dan,

Sounds in the GT cabin can be VERY deceiving due to harmonic transfers taking place.

For example, a noise that sounds like it is coming from one location when you are driving may sound like it is coming from another location when you are in the riders seat.

My suggestion is to take nothing for granted nor discount any potential source until you have checked & verified each potential cause.

Tracking down sounds, noises, vibrations, etc. can be quite frustrating.

You will find and solve the isuue with perseverance.

Is your wife are significant other in the car? I've noticed this annoying sound when those conditions are in place. :rofl

That's more of a whine than a squeak isn't it?

You guys better hope she doesn't read this and figure out where you live :biggrin.

It doesn't sound like a suspension component. It sounds too high in the cabin. It does sound like the glass. I'm going to see if I can put one corner up on a jack and see if I can induce it without moving. Maybe I'll be able to isolate it.

I had it where the clam shell was loose on the drivers side. To look at it it seemed closed, I think the door light should be on too.
Try pulling on the air vent and see if the clam move up. B

I thought I eliminated the clam latches, seals, etc. from the equation when I drove it with the clam open but hooked on the safety catches. Noise was still present. On the safety catch there isn't any torque put into the clam from the chassis flex... I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but will this weekend...

Particularly when both are untimely present.

I can eliminate some of the theories. Air box isn't the source, The rubber capped springs that pop the clam aren't it, the seat isn't it.

I did find that the interior trim piece at the base of the bulkhead glass is loose and can be pulled out for about 20% of the width of the glass.

Could something have been disturbed when I had the passenger side seat belt replaced?

So, I'm looking for some more ideas. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I might just try spraying wd40 around the bulkhead glass as my next guess...

Did you ever figure it out? I have the same rattle that just came up the last few times I have driven? Over medium sized bumps I hear it. Either on the gas or not the clunk sounds like its behind my ear in the glass. When I open the clamshell I can grab the upper cross brace, shake hard, and recreate the noise, but no one can pin point it. Seems low in the chassis and I'm worried the half shaft bolts are loose and clunking when I go over a bump. I'm afraid to loosen the outer bolts and check since they are single torque bolts. I've eliminated the clam shell as the source. I'm down to the bottom diffuser, belly pans, or the dreaded half shaft bolts. Any help out there. I've had the updated bolts put in. It's not the drivers seat.

I do have T&A shocks which could be the culprit. Why would they be quiet all summer and now make noise?

For me it sounds as though it comes up from the steering column. It is the Heim Joints on my newly installed T&A coilovers. Could you be hearing the rear Heim joints?

Only happens on the low speed bumps like a speed bump, nothing on smooth road way or at speed.
