Help For Windshield Pitting?

Been running Clearplex on mine since new, still perfect & optically clear.
I have a few in stock that are pre-cut for the GT if you need one.

I have many thousands of miles on mine in the rain. No scratching. If you review the old thread on the skin, I posted that when we drove to VA for the Rally, something got on the windshield during the downpours while driving (maybe truck axle grease). A little toothpaste took it right off. Unless I tell you there is a skin on, you won't know it.

I've got the Clearplex too. About 4 years (maybe 5) now. Still clear, still no pitting. Used with the wipers at least two dozen times with no scratches so far. VERY happy with it. FULL DISCLOSURE - when I first put it on, you could see some lines, but after a few days in the sun, those lines are gone. You can still see them if you're looking for them, but if you're looking 'through' the glass (rather than 'at' the glass), it's invisible.

Having seen my friend's glass without the clearplex, I don't think our windshields are any more pit prone than my 911 glass (which is the worst glass I've ever had for pitting, but doesn't seem to 'star' like my audi glass or my GF's Nissan). So maybe, like on the Porsche, it's a design thing, (maybe slightly 'softer' so it will pit rather than star/crack)?

I looked at the Clearplex web site. They don't seem to have a pre-cut pattern for the Ford GT....at least it's not shown on their home page.

RaceDeck, please do a search for the windshield skin. StormCat was at SEMA in Vegas years ago and found the place that made them. A NASCAR window film place that made tearoffs if I am not mistaken. They made a template and many of us bought them right away. The final experience was it depended on who installed it as to how good it came out. Seems that window tinters did better than body protection appliers. Bony was pissed at the manufacturer for quite some time, but it boiled down to the application process. I've had mine on for almost 7 years with little dings and pits, but it has saved the glass on numerous occasions. The introductory price at the time was $125 and I bought two.

Has anyone used Rain-X on the Clearplex? Hopefully, there is no chemical reaction.

I have not used Rain-X on mine, but I believe StormDrain uses it all the time on his since he has no wipers. You need to ask him direct, although he has been out of the country a lot lately.

I'm having my 2nd windshield protector put on this week. Had the first one for about 6 years. The windshield underneath is pristine. Minimal visual distortion with the product.

All you guys who've had good luck with a protection film: please specify the manufacturer of your windshield skin. This thread has included a number of mfg (some out of business it seems), and a recommendation without specific reference to the mfg is not much help ....

Especially those of you who drive in the rain and have had no problems, which product are you using?

The fenders have to be removed (well technically probably not off the car, but disconnected.

...a factoid that still 'bugs' me. 'Really didn't need to be that way. 'Easiest solution would have been to widen the 'trunk lid' itself laterally - from the outside edge of left fender to the outside edge of the right fender and continuing rearward toward the windshield, starting at a point approx 3 or 4 inches (or whatever) forward of the "A" pillars so that when the trunk lid was opened, what we now see as part of the 'fenders' in the area around the "A" pillars would be lifted completely out of the way during windshield swaps.

For the life of me I can't understand why something like that wasn't done.

I'm getting a new windshield (stress crack). What clear film should I get? Can the film be put on the glass before the glass is installed?

I've got Clearplex on mine I've been very happy with it. When it was first installed, I could see some 'waves', but no issues after it had some time in the sun (which you've got a lot of!). Get a good installer, our glass is heavily curved which does not lend itself to an easy flat laydown.

Gary, a long time ago StormKitty talked a guy at SEMA into making some windshield skins for our cars. They did the same stuff for NASCAR as I remember. Many of us bought the product. The owners who had installers that did body panel work faired less well than than those of us that used window tint installers. My skin has been on eight years now and has held up extremely well and has saved my windshield many times. The company that made them went out of business. My advice is to have it done after the windshield is installed so it can be replaced with more ease when necessary. Have a window tint guy do it rather than someone that applies body wraps or other protective materials. I don't know what other products are out there now, but as stated, the stuff we had before is no longer available.

Thank you Pro and Frank. The GT Guys are getting the windshield for me. I asked them to see if it made sense to put the film on before installation. If the installers (glass specialists, not the GT Guys) use suction cups to handle the glass, it may not be a good idea.

Franky, that company has disappeared all together in the support for the FGT when I looked last year. While it was "tougher" than normal clear bra of 7+ years ago there today are numerous companies that have more than likely a better product than what was going through the forum back then... Suggest either Xpel, 3M or other brands.

.... and I still have Storm Kittys find on the glass. Looks like crap but then again better the film than the glass.....
