Interesting study...I had always assumed that a lean, nonsmoker like myself was advantageous to the health system. However, because people like me live longer on average than obese and/or smokers, our total health care costs over a lifetime are more. It would not surprise me if we found similar results here in the US. Most of us are aware that the majority of the health care costs worldwide involve taking care of the elderly. :eek

I'd suggest you get rid of all of your cycling gear and bikes and immediately take up smoking and become a regular customer of Burger World.

That is why smoking saves lives and I don't mean tires.

Just FYI, only 17% of cigarette smokers develop lung cancer.

I'm sure you're right, Frank, but what percentage of smokers of 20 years or more duration get COPD/emphysema or some other significant limitation of lung function?

What are the stats for cigar smokers?

Cigar smokers and those that use chaw don't usually develop lung cancer. They are highly prone to cancers of the mouth and throat. Usually, a good oral toilet will keep the bad things away. You should always brush your teeth and use mouthwash, visit dentist regularly cause they are usually the ones to find them. If you really want to be a worry wart, any lump in the neck (i.e. big lymph nodes) should be investigated.

Indian cigarettes for me.

American Indians are a lower percentage of the population, therefore lower the odds, right? :bs
