This is the Steve McQueen "LeMans" movie camera car that was severely chopped to mount cameras for the film's track scenes. They needed something fast enough to keep pace with the Ferraris and Porsches. Now restored to it's original configuration and being sold with the original bits that were sawed off for its filming duty. Turn your sound up!

Pretty cool historical piece. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for.

He said that the "original carbon fiber" body work would be sold with the car. I know CF was invented and available in early forms in the 60's but was not aware the GT40s used it in their bodywork.

As I understand it, The GT 40 race cars in the 60's were the first automobiles to use carbon fibre. A dash piece(s) were of CF.

Seriously cool video! That car's gotta fetch several million - maybe a record sale for a GT40!

Car went for 10 mil.! A record for GT 40's, I think.

It was hammered sold at $10M ... the $11M stated in the article includes the auction fees.

I believe this is a world record for a GT40 due to its Gulf Team racing provenance and link to the LeMans film and McQueen.

That's incredible! Little bit surprised it went that high.

Me too !!!

That means all the FGTs just doubled in value, right? :biggrin

Touche' :lol

We(Ed Sims and entourage) got into RM actions Saturday night after the action closed, but were able to see this wonderfully restored car in the lobby of the hotel.

It was $10M to the buyer & the highest amount for an American car ever! And we were there! Here are my iPhone photos. Always go after the auction is over & everyone clears out. Photos are better without crowds plus all the posters, catalogs, cigars etc are free!

Ed

PS And if you are desperate there are plenty of half empty cocktails around!

Thanks for the great images Ed.
I've always thought that the GT40s were very inexpensive compared to their Ferrari brethren. However, as George Stauffer told me years ago, they're the wrong F car.
I wonder why the owner didn't return the car to its original Mirage body as well? I think there's only one Mirage left.

This GT40 joins the "big league" of all time high auction prices. See Hemmings article attached.

The 2X Lemans winner P1075 is or was sitting in AZ in a private collection. That car just went up in $$$ big time. I bet it's worth $18-$20m after this auction...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the money this car brought. I should have gone and had some of those half empty cocktails Ed was talking about to help me figure it out.
