Joey,

I like people who are passionate about their viewpoints and you certainly have contributed a lot to this forum. But I am going to request that you be a bit more specific as sweeping negative generalizations condemning the entire employee and product base of companies like General Motors are not warranted. This forum has always tried to be American car and especially Ford Motor Company friendly. During my two decades as a General Motors dealer I knew a lot of General Motors employees who cared deeply about both the company and this country. I've also met some General Motors employees and managers who fit your description of them to a tee.

And I like the new Camaro, I think it's a good looking car. A bit heavy perhaps, but it's styling hits the retro/modern bull's-eye for old turds like me. Alas, I will never buy one as I am on a one-man quest to purchase enough Ford Motor Company vehicles to put them back in the black! :banana :cheers

The fate of both General Motors and Chrysler are now in the hands of government bureaucrats, most of whom have never manufactured anything in their lives, or had to meet a payroll. I don't know how or if they will ever be able to extract themselves from the faustian bargain they have made, but I wish them well. Alan Mullally has repeatedly stated that the failure of General Motors will cause enough damage to Ford Motor Company supplier base to bring it down as well.

General Motors needs its own Alan Mullally. The US Treasury Department would do well to turn over their entire stake in GM to Roger Penske and then walk away. Perhaps he could pull it off. God bless America.

Chip,
Well said. I would say more, but I think Bony would not approve. Let me just say that as a college professor, I find it disappointing that students look to everyone but themselves to take care of them. In my opinion, they are missing out on the joy and excitement of life. Many of GM's executives seem to have the same attitude. Somehow, someone else is going to save them. For some reason, they do not recognize that their egregious stock options are not going to be worth anything!

Chip, ....."just popping your moderator cherry" as gentle as possible.....

Yes, I suppose I am. Especially toward long-term and valued members who are friends of mine. But in trying to be "gentle" perhaps I have not been clear enough. If there is one thing that distinguishes this Forum from all others it would be civility. When I wade into some of the other automotive forums and read an endless stream of comments such as, "Fords are worthless", which then generate intelligent responses such as, "Oh yeah, well Chevys are TURDS", I take away nothing of value from the exchange and it diminishes my desire to return. The Ford GT Forum exists to provide education, entertainment, and good fellowship between its members. Nonspecific sweeping negative generalizations are counterproductive as regards all three. If you'd like to make a comment about certain members of General Motors management staff, or comment about the styling or abilities of their automobiles, your comments are welcome. There is certainly plenty to comment on there and I would probably agree with most of what you say. But if you want to say that all General Motors managers suck, and the Camaro is a turd, I'm going to delete such comments no matter who they are made by. You and I both enjoy this Forum for a reason, let's keep it that way.

Chip

Here! Here! :thumbsup

If Roger was about 15 -20 years younger, I could easily imagine that he would be in the thick of it right now relishing the opportunity.

Well said, Chip.
GM's problems, and the U.S. auto industry as whole, are a lot deeper than current bad management, bad union/wage/benefit/legacy issues, or even bad product lines. If one looks back at the heyday of the U.S. auto industry, before the 73-74 fuel crisis, when everyone thought the domestic auto biz would dominate forever, then they are looking back with rose colored glasses.
Post WWII, the U.S. auto makers, with the possible exception of GM, had some major league foul ups. Ford really stepped in it with the Edsel line, and without the Mustang, one wonders of Ford would've ever recovered. The American Motors Company existed on life support until it was finally folded into Chrysler. And Chrylser, especially Plymouth, even in a terrifc 1960s economy, would've died in the '60 had it not been for some intersting and relatively cheap muscle cars. I'm not even taking into account the smaller manufacturers such as Studebaker.

Chip's comments about the Govt b'cats never having manufactured anything or even made payroll is spot on. What the Govt types will NEVER understand is how fragile almost any business can be, large or small, especially when unforseen regulations (always with the "best intentions"-see Hayek) creep in and disturb the natural order of things. Just remember Reagan's famous axiom about government's interpretation of business: "If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." The auto industry for too long represented what many in Govt hate; something that was succesful (and in their distorted thinking at someone or something elses expense;the workers, the environment, who knows what else). So, when things were really cooking, the Govt altered the rules. And when things got worse, (new competition, business downturns, etc.) the govt added different rules because the good times would last forever.
Well, they didn't. And now we've gone from taxing, regualting to subsidizing. And it still won't work.

H'mmmmmmmmmm...'looked up this "GM/Segway" thing-a-mah-bob just for ha-ha's and I can't really see any reason to expect the public to stampede into showrooms to get one:

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/94542cc0-23a9-11de-996a-00144feabdc0.html

Now, I realize the Lion in The Wizard of Oz had more courage than I, but, lemme tell ya, I wouldn't have the backbone to operate this in city commuter traffic. (And I'd wager it will come with a warning sticker on the dash(?) telling it's operator to stay off the freeway with it! lol!)

Ya, I know: "What's the diff between driving that or your Harley, Pockets?" Good question. But, I know there's an answer somewhere... :willy:willy:willy
