Well I want to switch to a circulating system that uses one pump with a pressure valve. The current is just designed for such specific use that it is difficult to adapt it to new ideas.
Rather than an alternate tank why not modify that which in your gal? IMO the placement of the OEM tank is well suited for the location of the weight and safety.

Okay next question... Mechanical fuel pumps, what's the word on them? It looks like a quite, reliable, high volume option. Are there any downsides?
I'll be surprised if Hoffman use electric pumps on his beast.
