has to be frame damage. the insurance companies get real jittery when they see any kind of chassis and frame damage, even minor because I've repaired cars that looked a lot worse than that.

Fair assessment - the insurance company will not warranty a frame repair - so given the cost of a new frame it is a total pretty immediately.

Just a friendly PSA as there have been numerous totals in the last 2 month - these cars/tires are terrible in cold weather. The experts on here can step in on this subject. Stepping off the soapbox!

I'll take a look at it on Tuesday, as it's only a few miles down the road. I'm sure they won't let me take things apart to check for frame damage, but I'll do the best I can. Looks like a lot of parts are included with the car. This is the car I posted about a while back.

I'm no expert, but this kind of post really irks me. ALL summer performance tires do not perform well in cold weather. This is not a Ford GT phenomenon. This is universal.

That's why they call them SUMMER TIRES. Doh!

You are irked by a post that wants to remind folks to be careful? Hmmmm? Also, I think the COMBINATION of performance (summer) tires AND high rear-wheel torque at low rpm AND the lack of electronic nannies DOES make the GT perhaps a little more skittish to drive in cold weather. No need to shoot/criticize yogi95 for stating the facts.

No need to criticize me for being irked by opinion that is patently BS (having driven my GT on OEM Goodyears through DC winters). You know when it is cold and you know you are on summer tires.

I don't know of a worse cold weather combination than the OEM Goodyear tire that came on the car and a Ford GT. It just performs very, very poorly in cold weather. They lose adhesion with even the tiniest throttle input. I venture I'm one of the only people, if not the only person, that has ever made passes at the drag strip in sub-40* weather. Despite the fact they came with a "do not drive" warning for temps below a certain threshold, even the R compound tires that came on the 662 hp GT500 weren't as bad, and I drove that all winter.

Yes indeed...this same characteristic makes my old 911 tricky in the cold and wet...

I have seen dozens of GTs destroyed over the past 7 years because folks don't recognize that too much excitement, inexperience, 550 hp, no traction control and the OEM GY tires below 40 degrees are lethal combinations sure to destroy your car.

Some say as many as 15 percent of all GTs made have been destroyed, maybe more by now.

Plus I think there are a lot of new GT owners these past two years that just don't know how careful one must be driving this car on cold surfaces, with no nannies, with cold tires of any make.

OK, on the Goodyear F1 tires. The GT500 and Shelby GT came with a note that discouraged driving below, I think 52*F (i recall that number because it wasn't rounded or anything). I looked at my Ford GT book and was surprised this warning wasn't in our books... I had the equivalent on my Shelby CSX Cobra (original "factory" tires) Both my Shelby GT and Cobra sucked in colder temps (say below 60) on colder pavement - this is what you get when you drive your car out of the garage to the street after a cool fall or spring morning. Yes, they had the grip of a hockey puck on ice. THat is, none.

To DBK's 2014 GT500 observation: These are second generation F1 tires, and everyone says they are very good compared to the originals, maybe even better than our beloved Bridgestones. But they don't make them in our sizes.

I'd say given his experience as a long time insurer and owner of GTs his comments are helpful to the unwashed . I don't think he was limiting this to GTs. Relax

They may be better than the originals, but they still are not good tires (Not as good as the Bridgestones). Most GT500 owners get out of them immediately and into something like the MPSS.
