A.J. Baime, author of GO LIKE HELL (The Ford (GT40) Ferrari Battle For Le Mans) interviewed me for his MY RIDE feature in the Wall Street Journal. It's out on Wednesday, March 19 in print and can be found online, along with a slide show, at http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303563304579447271776857850

A.J. still works for Playboy and has written another book about the auto industry and WW II. They are making a movie based on his GO LIKE HELL book, lots more exposure for Ford & GT40. Alas, no invite to the mansion!

Many thanks for the nice words. Since buying a GT and falling in lust with it, as I did with the GT40 in 1967, will give the brand/nameplate as much exposure as I can. It will always be an American Icon.

IMDB lists the director as Joseph Kosinski. With Tom Cruise as Carroll Shelby? I loved the book. Even exchanged some emails along the way with AJ. But this looks like a sell out. I'll still go see it but will probably wait until after opening night where I will be at Carroll's graves to watch him turn over.

Carroll's last race, as a driver, was the Pacific Grand Prix at Laguna Seca (Monterey, CA) on October 23rd, 1960 in a "Birdcage" Tipo 61 Maserati owned by J. Frank Harrison of Chattanooga Glass Company. As I've mentioned before, my friend, Eddie, and I crewed for Carroll (and Jim Jeffords in the long-tail Le Mans Birdcage) that weekend, where Carroll finished 2nd overall and won the USAC Sports Car Road Racing Championship. Here are a couple of pictures from that day -

Recently, Ed found this video from the race that day, on Flickr -

I thought you might enjoy seeing what Laguna Seca looked like back then, and the cars that we worked on - brings back great memories to me....

Great shots, documenting history. I was just starting out as a car magazine editor in 1960, didn't meet Carroll until 1964 at Riverside at a Ford Press event. He took me (and others) for hot laps in comp-prepped Cobra early in the AM after a night of seriously heavy partying in his suite. Had reservations about belting myself in with Shel at the wheel, but he was masterful. Incredible experience.
