Not trying to upset the cart here.......although I think those look really great......I purchased one from Bob Ida Automotive many years ago, and had him install it.........I dont remember that the installation cost as much as $500......but people here know more than I,.........The last I checked with Ida Automotive he did have about 5 or 6 left..........I dont know how much he wants for them...but if it helps I paid $750.00, and had to give him the cap off the car. The caps that were ingraved were purchased from Ford....so they are NOS.

His shop is in Morganville New Jersey.........I dont have his number, but I guess a little googoling will find it.

Gino

P.S. At the time he did tell me that whom ever made them spent a lot of time on these to get them perfect.

These caps are a billet recreation so you can keep your stock cap if you ever want to return the car to stock but you will need to take the original cap off then send the bottom ring out to be painted with the new cap so that both pieces match perfectly. If you wouldn't mind please post some pictures of the engraving work that you have on you cap. Thanks for the info

Gentlemen,

This sounds like a job for our master machinist Pe2unia. Machine them out of billet aluminum with the appropriate logo, and then paint them the stock silver color to prevent corrosion. What do you think John?

Chip

John,

What took you so long! :lol Well done! Another fine piece from our official GT Forum machine shop master tech. How much for that item and how much does Rich charge to install it? What is the original gas cap made out of? Mine feels like plastic.

Hey Chip there are more details to come soon as we are all working on them. Since you have a yellow car as well you may like what I did to "Mellow Yellow" this weekend.:eek

Pe2unia,

For all the new guys I might set this up by saying engraving is what I do. We are the largest and number one ranked engraving company for making (impression engravings) in the world. We have out ranked the #2 engraving company in europe for 21 years in a row and have 4 of the worlds 7 master engravers working at my company (like winning the 24 hrs of lemans every year 21 years in a row for me). Now that being said I am really impressed of what I see. We do about 10,000 engraved special designs a month and rarely do I get impressed but you have out done yourself. You are either full of passion---really bored--- or a total GT geek. OR ALL 3

Chip I pretty certain that the cap is made of cast aluminum.

Pe2unia, That is one of the best I have ever seen, congrats on the great work that you do.

I will try to post a coupe of pictures of the one I was referring to (Ida Automotive) Although the pictures are not of any quality, the engraving looks really good. (please excuse the focus, but the engraving is crisp.)

After speaking to Bob Ida today, he has 4 caps left in his inventory, and I doubt he will get any more, as there is a lot of work in engraving these caps, as you all very well know.

He is asking $750.00 each,(plus shipping) with NO EXCHANGE....he will sell them outright to whom ever wants them. I understand the removal of the fender is not necessary, but it is still a lot of work to install them. He assured me that the caps are NOS from Ford.

Bob Ida can be reached at Ida Automotive in Morganville New Jersey @ 732 591 2630.......

Gino

Thanks Gino! Did Bob have these caps repainted after the engraving was complete? Are the engraving edges as jagged as they appear to be?

This may be dumb but I seem to remember a cap that looked like these on the red car used in the DVD that came with the GT.

I'm sure Bob did his similar to the few I did. Original cap already painted and just a very very very small cnc bit. I think each of my caps took 8 hours to mill very very slow so as to not mess up the paint. The hardest part for my guy was he had to build a jig to allow him to do a depth over the curved surface. The caps were I think $200 a piece at the time and the milling, ready, about $800 per cap. I don't remember how much rich and dennis charged to put it on but it did require fender removal.

Oh and if the CNC machine missed any you had a scratched cap. The really good ones were used and the others placed far far away in the shelves for later. Keep in mind the original caps were pressed out and are metal.

No john,

The caps finish is the original...........I am not being fair to him posting these horrible pictures, but I will get better one's so you can see the engraving more clearly.

I do like how your spacing was done much better. These were copied from one of the originals from Ford...which GTJOEY has.

OK I look forward to the pictures. I only wish you would have brought them up back in November as members asked us to do this project and my machinist has a week and a half of his time invested:ack

As many of you may or may not know the installation of the gas cap will require some technical know how or I recommend using one of our forum sponsors such as The GT Guys. When Rich and Dennis installed my gas caps at the Maryland event it took them approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours per car and things went flawlessly but after watching the process I would think many forum members would be able to do the install with a little technical assistance from our GT forum pros. The cost of the raw unpainted billet gas cap with standard (FORD GT) engraving will be $450 plus shipping & handling ($25) but there are a couple of hurdles that will go along with the installation that you will need to consider:

1). In order to make sure the stock bottom ring (that you will reuse) will match the new top billet gas cap these two pieces will need to be painted together. (You wouldn’t want to have the bottom ring and the cap a different shade of color from one another)
2).The stock OEM gas cap assembly will need to have the rivets removed and female threads tapped into the ring for the re-installation of the new billet gas cap.

Now as for the installation cost from the GT Guys including painting, tapping of the threads, and a complete professional installation will cost $620
If you want the GT Guys to prepare a cap for you before you remove the existing cap there will be a core charge of $325 to be sure that the bottom ring on your car gets returned as they will send you a complete gas cap kit.

I will need to start a list of members that want a billet cap so that we can be sure we have a large enough order to make this build worth the process for our machinist. Once the list is confirmed the machining process will begin within 2 to 3 weeks.:thumbsup

Note: We are also offering optional engraving on the flat knob at an additional $100

John, I had no idea that this was brought up in Nov. (I should be on here more often) But, looking at your work, and the pricing..I think this subject of Ida; caps is mute.

Yours are a far superior quality from what I see, and am I understanding that the price is less? How can anyone go wrong? I think for the members that dont have one...they should get one now..as I dont think your price and quality will repeat itself in the future.

Great work..

Gino

P.S. Ida will not be getting any more of these.(i was told from him)

Fuel door lids

Put us down for 3 please for now.

One for my car (FORD GT) which we will fill in the lettering black after it is chromed.
One for another X1 TT we are doing (FORD GT) in the same spot and (X1 TT) on the flat spot where Mellow Yellow has the 3 large holes
One for a custom show car we are doing (FORD GT) with maybe a number on the flat spot. I have to verify this.

As far as these pieces go they are high quality and will go quite well with any combination.
