3.0L V6 diesel, codenamed “Lion”, that is set to appear by 2018. 10-speed transmission will debut in both trucks and body-on-frame SUVs, as well as a new, aluminum bodied version of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator

Thats great news!

And only 4 years after Dodge debuts a 3.0 Diesel in their 1500 Ram (2014) and GM committed to have a small diesel in their new mid-sized truck in 2015. I still think that Ford is building the best trucks - especially with the brave move towards aluminum, but they are woefully late to the party with a smaller diesel option.

I have had four diesels over the last 10 years, love them and would love them even more in a half ton I think. Hopefully that gets moved up.

A new & updated Expedition would be nice to.

You mean in a diesel? That would be GREAT. But looks like only the V6 Ecoboost for '15. Wish I waited for that before getting the guzzling '14 V8:(

The Ecoboost V6 is a remarkable engine - and I'm reminded of that each time I tow with mine ('13 F150). Just pulled my enclosed single-car Featherlite (loaded) back from Vegas to SoCal. Through the mountain passes, the Ecoboost seldom goes above 1700-1800 rpm and when it does, it may spin all the way up to 2600-2700 rpm to maintain speed. Amazing linear, low-rpm, diesel-like smooth power. But...... it does drink the petrol. Empty or loaded, when I'm towing the aerodynamic (not) brick trailer, my MPG is 9.7 to 10mpg. (70-75mph speed) Unloaded and at 75-80mph it does about 15mpg. In brief, this powerplant has over-delivered on the expected power but underwhelming on the over-hyped fuel mileage. Overall, however, I am VERY happy with it.

This is why Ford hasn't offered a diesel in the half ton segment in my estimation. The EcoBoost gives diesel-like performance without the diesel headaches (higher initial cost, higher maintenance cost, fuel price, etc) with the obvious trade-off being fuel-mileage.

Yes looks like there is some pent up demand for half ton diesels

Never understood why Ford did not develop something sooner in a small diesel package. How cool would it be to have an Explorer with an efficient and powerful little diesel. 30 MPG would be a cakewalk with that combo. I ended up buying a couple year old GL350 Bluetek diesel instead of a new Explorer. Replaced a ten year old Explorer and would have bought another if they offered the diesel. Don't know why I like diesel so much because the fuel has become expensive, but I like them.

I've still got a decent sized holding of Ford stock, but sometimes they mystify me when it comes to being first on the market with something. That being said, the Ecoboost is a great motor from what I've heard.

Cindy and I have become sincere diesel-maniacs. Two reasons I guess. Torque & Fuel mileage/Range. Started with the A3 TDI. Then bought daughter 335D. (Later traded 335D in for Boss 302.... but entire family misses 335D - a real hot rod.) Leased a Jetta TDI so Boss didn't have to endure college parking lots. Cindy replaced A3 TDI with new ML350 BlueTec. I recently purchased Touareg TDI Exec for DD and couldn't be happier. Cindy's lease almost up on the ML and looking at the 328d (32 City / 45 Hwy) as replacement. Here in SoCal, diesel always within 8-10% of low-grade gasoline prices.

How do you like the ml vs touareg? Thinking of the bluetec but also of the VW as wife's DD

That is another thing I like with the GL350, you fill it up and you have a 600 mile range. $90 to fill it, but don't have to do it too often.

Here's what you do to get around a ridiculous energy policy that discourages clean diesel by excess fuel taxes, yet pays absurd subsidies to electric vehicles that are forever in search of an outlet.

You buy a 5,000 lb. TDI SUV that averages 27 mpg and gets 600 miles on a tank. You shop at Winn Dixie, which gives you fuel discounts for no apparent reason. And this is what a family of two pays per gallon with each fill up (approximately, depending on volume of grocery purchases).

I've been saying it for 10 years that if the F150 had a diesel, it stay/remain/always be the hottest 1/2 ton on the market....
