Investigators are trying to determine what caused the Ferrari to spin out and then cross the center divider, which, in that section of the highway is either a raised curb or a median strip, said Sgt. Evan Sailor, public information officer for the Newport Beach police.

It's interesting to read the comments made by the general public "non-Ferrari" owners on the Orange County Register website:

CNN has an iReport on their website of a video of the site before and at the time the first responders arrive. I am not going to post it though. Horrific.

Even worst it is reported that the car was a xmas present for a young man whose 1st drive was his last drive. :ack

'Gives you some insight as to why my opinion of "the general public" isn't very high...

One has to wonder if he was given ANY pointers at all regarding how to pilot one of these cars before he actually got behind the wheel...:frown

The OC R / LA blogs are classy compared to the cesspool of F chat; they have 2 putrid threads sprinkled with csi wannabes, libel, racism, and hate. Nice folks.

Fchat, cesspool... Good choice of words, unfortunately that is quite the correct term. It can be an enlightening place but all too often is seeded is with some really nasty individuals that are allowed to post with reckless abandon. I got into it with a few folks over there several years ago that were sticking up for a dealer that I was in a "tussle" with. Outright lies "sub-posted" by some of the "good ole boys" were definitely encouraged.

Went to cnn ireport and there is no video feed....just can hear a few EMS people arriving with a lot of background chatter in the distance...not much else, couldn't see any photo or vid. There is a part 2 on the side bar...clicked on that and absolutely nothing. Gave plenty of time to load both and at the bottom it said "done". Jusy wondered if anyone here was capable of seeing either video on cnn ireport?

Youtube has a 2 part video about 10 mins long; its very disturbing.

A guy (maybe same as LA blog) was on the scene with Iphone camera, in what looks like within 60 seconds of the crash, before any fire/ems got there.

Its really revealing because you have the clock ticking and the fireball roaring away;

-A round half minute mark, 1st official arrives stands away about 15 ft reporting into walky-talky extent of damage;

-then around minute 2 two others with fire extinguishers use them intermitently, but back off.

-Finally around minute 3, the large tanker trucks show up; and a tire or pressurized tank blows.

-The first hose opens up at minute 5; flames out under 30 seconds.

-1st body on stretcher, EMS truck off under 8 min's; 2nd carried of at 10th min; that has to be a record.

I am sure, the above timing, distance, engagement, protocol by officials is based on pyro-technics/haz-mat/EMS scientific training, and has years of experience behind it.

Bottom line:

God help you if you are in this situtation as it appears there is a window of 5 minutes with fires raging at 500-1000 degrees with no one to help you....you can hear the sirens...but even in video they sound very far off.

The picture gallery on OC Reg shows, the car (spider) split in half and the seats facing the open road with belts attached. While it seems like survivors could be dragged off....I imagine just based on radiant heat trying to move a fire-place log or being over a bbq....thats near impossible for civilians to do.

Very sad....and scary. Curious if fire suppresion system would have helped or if lines would be ruptured by impact.

I suppose the fire suppression system would be of benefit. If, it did not shatter when the car came apart. What is disturbing is that (I think) is the 5th or 6th Ferrari accident that I have seen (video of) where the car came apart and burned. :confused:confused

I wonder if that is caused by massive failure of the carbon fiber or what? I guess Indy can chime in here .. but the trend is troubling. I would prefer to know that the chassis is going to protect me a bit if my brain switches off for a second.

I would wonder if a fire suppression system would even be intact enough to operate under those conditions. I doubt it.

This is certainly a very sad moment in time and one that no amount of speculation will ever be able to quantifiably define what or why it happened.

Most every model and make of gal has been through a similar event and yet with generally only those gals of significant interest making headlines and yet I dare say that all of those folks within experience much the same independent of the marquee.

Very sad

A sad but good reminder of the often deadly combination of kids and fast cars, even without adding any other variables. Thanks for the follow-up.
