Youtube has a 2 part video about 10 mins long; its very disturbing.
A guy (maybe same as LA blog) was on the scene with Iphone camera, in what looks like within 60 seconds of the crash, before any fire/ems got there.
Its really revealing because you have the clock ticking and the fireball roaring away;
-A round half minute mark, 1st official arrives stands away about 15 ft reporting into walky-talky extent of damage;
-then around minute 2 two others with fire extinguishers use them intermitently, but back off.
-Finally around minute 3, the large tanker trucks show up; and a tire or pressurized tank blows.
-The first hose opens up at minute 5; flames out under 30 seconds.
-1st body on stretcher, EMS truck off under 8 min's; 2nd carried of at 10th min; that has to be a record.
I am sure, the above timing, distance, engagement, protocol by officials is based on pyro-technics/haz-mat/EMS scientific training, and has years of experience behind it.
Bottom line:
God help you if you are in this situtation as it appears there is a window of 5 minutes with fires raging at 500-1000 degrees with no one to help you....you can hear the sirens...but even in video they sound very far off.
The picture gallery on OC Reg shows, the car (spider) split in half and the seats facing the open road with belts attached. While it seems like survivors could be dragged off....I imagine just based on radiant heat trying to move a fire-place log or being over a bbq....thats near impossible for civilians to do.
Very sad....and scary. Curious if fire suppresion system would have helped or if lines would be ruptured by impact.
