exhaust droning (again)

I'm going back to stock with a straight pipe and cut-outs connecting it to the engine. Have all the pipes and cut-outs. Just need time to weld it all up. A long ride on the highway with any of the catback mods is hard on the ears....besides I like to hear the radio after an hour or so entertaining myself with the exhaust. I just don't know what the quality of the sound will be with the cut-outs open. They can be set at about any amount of open but with no muffling at all they could be a bit harsh.

Why not open the original muffler, gut it out and re-weld it?

Wouldn't that be about the same as just putting a straight pipe instead?

Yes except for the look of originality.

Ya, but VCA banned my IP's as well...LOL. Now I have to use a proxy server if I want to visit.

Then there is no OFF and ON to the noise. It's all ON.

I had #3, however changed it out before bringing it into Alberta from Arizona. One cause I wasnt sure about border issues and two they seemed to be clamping down on exhaust noise here in Edmonton. If you are near Edmonton and havent heard the stock I have it on now. I have had people say the stock sounds great to them.
I miss the sound of the FRE however sure I would be paying out the nose in tickets to have it still on the car.

Steve, you're probably right about the volume of the FRE. The new laws here call for 92 db max at idle and 96 db max above idle. I think this is from 3 meters, but it might be closer than that. And from what I recall hearing when the FRE's fired up, I'm pretty sure it's louder than that. But wow, they sure do sound fantastic!!! When are we gonna get out for some drives? Are you out for the Indy race this weekend?

I have the one of the first M-9430-GTX Rear Exit Header systems (#3), and yes, they can be very loud when accelerating hard. I was recently at Willow's Thunderhill Raceway Park and was blackflagged for excessive noise. I pegged their meter at 118 db at about 30-50 feet distance.

Yet, if one keeps the engine at less than 2,000 rpm, they are very docile with no drone or volume.

And you drive/accelerate at less than 2,000 rpm how often?

And Ed Sims hit 109 db with his X-Pipes at the same distance.

Most of the time - usually shift between 2,000 and 2,500 to obtain good fuel efficiency - no need to go blasting around.

Thanks.....I am actually heading to Calgary this wknd to listen to NOT 4RN 's gt..I believe it has the Ford Racing Borla. I would however take you up on the offer of a listen if this wknd does not produce results. Thanks

Ditto Ralphie re Rear Exit Full-Length system. Actually pretty easy to modulate with a little judicious right foot control and shift point selection for (relative) stealth around town but GLORIOUS at WOT.

The only problem I've had with the full system is that after install on my Whippled GT my wife laid claim to the car and made it hers! She tossed me the keys to her pulleyed car with the Borla and told me we were trading. (I'd marry her all over again!)
