Ugh. http://jalopnik.com/5289379/save-the-enzos-priceless-ferrari-burns-to-crisp-in-canada

I wonder if it's Zahir from Calgary. Anyway, I'm SO glad I've got the Halon system in my engine bay. You can never be too careful!!!

Kendall, I'll be calling you on Monday or so, I have a few questions.
:cheers

No one likes to see a car go up in flames, especially a supercar.

But life entails risks, many of which we accept every day.
Diminish your risks by never flying again, driving any car or just going outside (you may get hit by a meteorite or struck by lightning).

I cannot recall any of our members having their GT engine compartment burst in flames. Not that it cannot happen.

For those who want the halon system on their car, that’s fine, but some are willing to accept the risk and for us that is fine as well.

I know of one case. There was a picture a long, long time ago of a GT in the desert with it's clamshell burnt. Couldn't tell you why or how it happened (and for all we know it could have been an "accident"), but I definitely saw at least one.

That said, luckily the Ford GT has shown significantly less propensity to spontaneously combust compared when compared with what is shown on the internet from makers of other similar mid-engine cars.

I'm pretty certain that this isn't Zahir's car. His is in Germany receiving some tweaks by EDO right now. What a tragedy.

I'm REALLY glad it's not Zahir's. I'm really sorry for whomever owns it, but Zahir has his out on the road all the time, I'm glad that will continue.

And I'm not expecting my car to burn down, but I'm still really glad the Cooltech Safecraft system is on my car.

Though I tend to be a bit of a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy, it hasn't stopped me from racing karts, sailboats and motorcycles, parachuting and flying aerobatics. But I have a halon system in my car less to protect the car (though I'm glad it does) but more because, keeping it in the attached garage, any fire would threaten my house.
But I'm not sure if that's in the service of my my belt or suspenders...
(pity about the Enzo though. Just after seeing that McLaren)

I feel that it's very cheap protection for your GT , garage and house. I love it and everyone that see's it thinks its a factory install. The purchase was a no brainer for many of us when purchased under a group purchase. With all the mods. being done today why wouldn't you want extra protection? Tomy Hamon

Shame about the Enzo. :frown

However, I have seen/heard quite a few Ferrari's go up in this manner. One series of photos showed a 430 that burned to the ground in 8 minutes at one of those exotic car driving events (thankfully no one was hurt).

Is there a common failure that causes the fires....is it always fuel line failure??? :confused

My guess is almost all of the fire are caused by either fuel or oil leaks. Fuel being the most prevalent. It doesn't take much of an imagination to guess what would happen if an oil, or fuel line leaks, or ruptures near the exhaust manifolds. Something to consider as the fleet of FGTs age. There are a lot of soft lines in the engine compartment, carrying high pressure flammable liquids. It is often recommended to change old radiators hoses; however never read that one should prophylatically replace fuel and oil lines. Yet the damage caused by a blown out radiator hose is minuscule compared to fuel line!

BTW, I do have a Safecraft system installed by Shadowman. Shadowman goes the extra distance to make the install look more OEM cutting holes in a bracket and using a 90 hardline where other installers may just bend a longer piece of softline. :thumbsup

A Mclaren F1 caught fire in California a few weeks back...sad to see any of these rare cars go this way.

After some maintenance at a local Ford shop, I found that two of my fuel injectors were leaking. It seems one of the tech must have stood on the fuel rail while working on the supercharger. Anyhow, coming home to the smell of gas and finding puddles of fuel in the engine compartment was not a warm and fuzzy moment for me. I ordered the halon system the next day. It has been a conversation piece at local car shows ever sense.
