Another option for RAW files is the semi-compact Canon G10, MSRP $499.

For many periods of time, I don't even own a compact digital camera. It forces me to bring my SLR or not have any pictures. But with two small kids, it's nice to always have a camera, so I broke down and bought the G10.

The 10D SLR is capable of great images. It was my first digital SLR. I went from a 35mm film A2E to 10D then to 5D.

The only downside is you will definitely not want to be changing lenses on the fly; as dust is a MAJOR issue on cameras w/out automated dust removal (through a ultrasonic vibration).

Yes, occasional sensor dust on my 5D drives me crazy. But my local Canon service center is close by and they will sensor clean typically within 3 hours.

the 40D, 50D, and 5D Mk II all have the sensor clean option, the 50D and 5D mk II have dust delete data built into the camera's software menus for those pesky bits of dust that don't shake off.

I'm sure you'll love the mk II when you get it:wink

I didn't know that about the dust delete data. Cool. I'm usually able to use the giotto rocket and blow off any sensor dust with air. I do change lenses frequently, but I do it carefully and quickly.

Yeah, it'll be nice not to have to worry about any of that. I think I most likely will get the Mark II.

I assume you have seen the Reverie video?

Interesting stuff Syco- as you said earlier, it's not just the equipment for taking great shots. You clearly have 'the eye' and I really do enjoy your shots when posted.

I bought a Leica M8 some while ago and have some reasonable results with that, I'm experimenting with RAW/DNG images at the moment..

Thanks for the compliment Neilda. Very much appreciated.

Love the M8, so cool. There's always something special about a Leica image. And they also came out with the new line of "affordable" lenses.

I've never shot with a Leica, film or digital, but would like to. Maybe in the future I will sell the bulky SLR and all the lenses and simplify with the purity of Leica.

How do you like using the M8 compared to an SLR?

The M8 is almost indistinguishable from the MP (which I shot with for many years) and it's a beautifully made camera. It's almost entirely manual - so shots taken are quite hard work compared with an autofocus camera. However the quality of the Leica glass is stunning.

I chose the M8 as I have 4 or 5 Leica lenses which are superb and also, not cheap! So it made sense to stick with the brand.

Neilda and Syco, are the Leica bodies still being made by Minolta? I won't us any othe microsocpe but a Leica, have for the past 25 years. Never get any eye strain. Some of the scope stuff they're making in China now.

As far as I'm aware the M8 and the lenses are entirely made by Leica - the lower end products such as the D-Lux are manufactured under licence.
