It would look nice on the roof of the house. My wife said I could only put it over the roof of the garage though. :confused
I don't think the car is available although I can tell you it is infact a shell. Real frame albeit an early weld study frame and not road worthy. The body is a fiberglass splash making it more or less a shell. It does have some authentic parts on it to make it appear more realistic (suspension, wheels, etc.) The margins on the car are dead nuts though-better than any show car (they are pinstripe tape lines)
That's funny, I was told it was a real car that was wrecked more than once.

The Roof display unit - the real story

This is the first mistake about GT trivia I have seen from you.
One of my tasks at SVT was to oversee the team. Required to put the car on the roof.
It is a long standing tradition to have a replica of each car assembled in the Wixom plant displayed on the roof.
So I went to get a close-up look at the other cars already on the Wixom main plant roof.
A T-bird, Town car & the LS. Just to see what was required to complete the illusion. The 3 existing cars on the main plant roof. Are early body mock-up shells that have a good paint job and glass (Actually the glass is painted black on the inside to resemble dark tint). No drive train at all. Just Trailer axles to hold the tires in place, Welded to the body with angle iron. No steering, the wheels do not even spin. The head lights and tail lights are wired to a transformer so the ilusion looks real at night.
Next the GT on the roof.
Taking photos of the other 3 cars back to SVT. Tom Reichenbach came up with the idea to use a work horse car that was crashed in Germany. As the base to build a roof display upon.
A little GT history. A work horse is a test mule car of sorts. When you have an existing car and you are building a new version of it. You start with the current car or truck. Make the revisions for the new model in a rough fashion. As a starting point to begin development of your new design. Well we had nothing to start with. So rough fiberglass molds were taken from the studio clay model.
Then aluminum frames were fashioned to fit below the Body. Like a funny car. They were similar to the intended frame. But more like a race car. They had fixed plastic windows. The doors and hood were cut openings one piece body. No door sills, with air leaks everywhere. Like a bad kit car. But we had to start some were.
The car on the roof was a work horse that was sent to Germany for Bosch to start the ABS development. Then within a few days smashed both the front and rear ends of the car into a guard rail. This cars center section is what the roof car is based on. Smashed sections were cut off at both front and rear firewalls. New One piece Fiberglass nose and tail shells were poprivted and glued on. Then 1” angle iron was used to create the structure to hold the trailer Axles in place. The wheels do roll. But there is no: steering, Engine Trans interior, Seats. It is just a gutted shell. Work horse cars never had any production intent parts. There components were a mix of modified Mustang and aftermarket race parts. So no Real GT parts would fit. But I agree it would be cool to have for display
Only one door opens to access the lighting equipment.
The roof display unit was then taken to SSV. Where they did an incredible job making the illusion complete. They laid on pounds of bondo. Installed the lighting. And painted the slick yellow paint, with black strips. Air brushed on the marker lights. As well as the body cut lines.
A funny story- Tom Reichenbach and I went to SSV to inspect the roof display car.
We turned the corner near the paint booth. And were blown away. No one had seen a yellow GT to date, in real life (only in the design studio) and we could not believe our eyes. Where did that car come from? Tom asked, from more than 20 feet away. We were sure it was a real car. The SSV guys had done there job. They had us fooled as well as a few others it seems?

Just an addition to what Waterboy posted, there is a functional battery charger in the car. Before it went on the roof, our electricians wired the lights up to work at night. They never did get the head lights to work tho, just the tail lights.
I tried to get the "shop car" we used around the shop, but was told by my boss that it, along with the roof car, would go to DST. (Ford's junk yard) There is a tremendous amount of history behind the shop car. It was the 3rd car we ever built at Wixom, and was used as a high mileage test car. I put a lot of hours into to the shop car, repairing it after it was wreaked 3 times, so I felt I deserved it. I didn't even get to take the prototype Borla muffler I put on it.
I haven't been by the shop in a while, so I'm not sure if it's gone or not, although I think the roof car is still there. :frown :frown

They're in deep financial trouble, borrowing money by the billions and they are too stupid to see that they have collectible product sitting all over the place that would raise hundreds of thousands of dollars if they would just e-bay it or take it to Barrett-Jackson. I know there are liability issues that Ford is scared of but their overpaid lawyers could attach disclaimers and releases to everything to cover that. There is no excuse for a publicly traded company on the edge of bankruptcy to be junking valuable collector items that relate to the history and heritage of the company. This is not in the best interest of the company or the shareholders, (or us GT lovers). At the least, they should save all this for their museum or offer it to the Smithsonian. I bet they would gladly take it considering the GT's unique history. :thumbsdow
Tex, most of it is mandated to be destroyed by law. Sarbannes-Oxley made alot of good collectibles trash. Some of the stuff can get sold, alot is to be destroyed. The roof car is not being destroyed. It's being taken somewhere else.
P.S, they've got around $40 billion in cash, I don't think bankruptcy is anywhere close. :wink
