A trip that got better every day, and the first day was AWESOME!!:banana

While the Edmonton crew (Nick – GTNick and Pro – Superfly) were off to LA and Kendall’s shop, Bob (FGT1987) had his car scheduled to go to Shadowman’s for some work but due to the cars being held up at the border for 4 days and the transport truck being in an accident, the 1 week of allocated time for Shadowman was down to 2 days. Please understand there was 3 days worth of work to be performed so obviously something had to give – not if you go by the handle Shadowman. He worked tirelessly until the wee hours of the morning for 2 days to get my Gal ready on time. I can not thank him enough for the effort he put in for me. His reputation in the GT world is well deserved. Thank-you Bill.:cheers

We flew out of cold, cold Canada on March the 4th and arrived in California where we travelled to Newhall to meet nota4re (Kendall) and his amazing family. We enjoyed their fabulous company for the evening, and then the following morning we picked up the cars for our drive up to Frazier Valley, across New Cuyama in a bit of snow [pic 1]!!, over to Santa Maria, and then we met up with Skyrex (Tom) for lunch and some pictures on the beach at Pismo [pic 2].:cool

After a fabulous lunch and photo opportunity with the boats behind us, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the Atascadero highway which took us to the James Dean memorial where we met up with our compatriots, Bob and his wife, who had travelled south from Shadowman’s facilities, across equally enjoyable roads. Despite the range of distances and times, we timed this meeting in the middle of nowhere to within 10 minutes of each other. While there, an older gentleman stopped to admire the cars and tell us that his friend in England has original footage of the GT40s at LeMans in the late 60s – including candid footage of the drivers getting into the cars in the pits and so on. I left contact information to try to get some of that footage. :thumbsup

Atascadero was so much fun that after we met up with Bob we returned down that road, stopping at times to make sure we had clear road ahead [pic 3]. Eventually we made our way to a quaint little resort in San Simeon where we were had a great dinner at Moonstone beach and were treated to some entertaining stories which convinced us to go for a drive on the PCH to Carmel. The next morning gave us some glorious photographs [pic 4] to commence the day before we headed north on one of the most amazing roads ever built [pic 5]. :bow

After jaunting up and down the PCH, we headed toward Santa Barbara along even more of these amazing roads and some beautiful coastal vistas. Kendall, you are a master at route planning!!! :bow We even got to drive our cars out onto a pier!!! [pic 6]

The following day gave us a few more entertaining coastal roads and we met up with Kendall and his energetic (but in a wonderfully good way) daughter, for a drive to Malibu where we had a fantastic lunch. We also met up with another GT owner, (George) and hung around Galpin Motorsports which is sort of an automotive shrine [pic 7]. Follow this up with a drive on Little Tujunga Canyon Rd!!! Wow!!! :thumbsup

Sunday brought us a 100 mile canyon loop which included some great photo opportunities and a LOT of fantastic twisty canyon roads, including again, of course, possibly now my favorite stretch of road in the world, Little Tujunga Canyon Rd. [pic 8] This drive was done with Kendall’s son, the luckiest 16 year old in the world, following us (quite adeptly) in a slightly massaged Subaru STi. We then went to Kendall’s for lunch and to remind him, in case he forgot, :wink how lucky he is to live SO CLOSE to such an amazing road. Eventually we joined Gaby for a drive to Rosamund to prepare for the Streets of Willow and for the pre-track day dinner with the instructors. Getting to talk about the cars with people who really, really know the cars was very entertaining

Monday, on the Streets of Willow. [pic 9] This is the most fun you can imagine in a GT. What an amazing supercar!!! Topping off the capabilities of this supercar are the people that it attracts to its ranks. First off, Richard Hille put on an amazing school. Neil Hanneman probably had the best job in the world, about a dozen times!! And all the instructors, Mac, Bill and Bob were absolutely 1st rate. Then Wally (cobrar1339) came out both days to help set up our race harnesses and to check that everything was A-OK. Along with his associate Don, they even made sure that things like tire pressures were checked and the nuts were torqued. My hat is off to those two, they didn’t need to be there, but they were. Top shelf fellas. Top shelf. Oh, and Kendall came out with his kids after their school was done for the day. Just to check on us. How awesome is that? And we can’t forget Tom’s wonderful wife who, on Tuesday despite being sick, managed to bake us some of the best cookies we’ve ever had!!! So, I don’ t know if the GT brings out the best in people, or it’s just that the best people are simply drawn to the GT, but there is certainly ample evidence for the latter in California. :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

Tuesday. Big Track. OK, forget the streets track, THIS is the most fun you can have in a GT. [pic 10] The ride was truly exhilarating and humbling at the same time. Imagine hard braking from 145 miles per hour into a sharp left and every fiber of your body is telling you to brake harder or you will go flying off the track, all the while the instructor is in the car saying no, no, more gas, more gas!! :eek Needless to say Richard Hille’s GT track record was safe. This is truly one amazing supercar!!! Sadly, after the day, we have to head back to Kendall’s to drop off the cars.

A little bit of benchracing and recapping the day for Kendall and co and we were off to Santa Monica for a day of decompression after the best vacation week ever. [pic 11]

Anyway, sorry this got so long. It was truly an epic journey. More than 1400 miles were put on each of our Canadian cars, and it’s safe to say that those were the best 1400+ miles we’ve each ever driven. Fantastic cars on fantastic roads with fantastic new friends. The only bad thing is that we’re going to really miss California!!! (Until we get to go back again…)

Tubbs (from Miami Vice) is Pro's twin brother... but he's only half as cool as Pro!

No problems Rick, we'll hopefully get a chance to chat some other time when the track doesn't beckon. And with your twins, it wasn't just calling you back, it was a demand from she who MUST be obeyed!!! :thumbsup

Thank you for the wonderful comments

It was my pleasure having the opportunity meet you and have the opportunity to massage your gal.

Nothing could have pleased me more than being able to complete the task at hand even though it became a compression of time knowing that the the results helped to insure a wonderful event.

Takes care

By the way Pro, I enjoyed your narrative of the trip so much I pre-ordered the hardcover coffee table book from Amazon that will be detailing your trek through California.

Is it true that the full length book will have pop-up pics and the first 100 orders get a commerative California GT die cast?

Seriously.....GT's and incredible scenery, guest cameos of all your new friends.....Now that is a book that would grace my coffee table. :lol :cheers

I would also like to add that the Californian drivers were very courteous to us. Whenever we caught up to slower traffic on the twisty roads I would guess that over 90% of cars pulled over to let us go by as soon as it was safe to do so (not that we were speeding or anything because that would be bad:biggrin). I suppose it just might have been a little intimidating with 3 GT's bearing down on you in the mirror - but kudos just the same.
