months and months ago Dennis and Rich did a bunch o' stuff on my car. One of the things they did for me was the sub-relocate. I actually never listen to the radio in the GT......but a few weeks ago I decided as I sat in traffic to check it out. The sub sounded like it was completley blown......all distorted and single ended......I know when it was stock it worked fine....if it is blown......anyone know how hard it is to locate another?......if this a standard Macintosh item? I suppose if its not I could get it reconed....
when I get near the GT again I'll check it out to see what the problem is as I haven't had time...........

Mine (relcoated) sounds just fine - actually better than original placement.

Make sure the box is bolted in tight along with the speaker itself. Second, check the conenctions, third and probably the easiest to do is look at the cone. Is the paper ripped?

I'll check on the replacement of it for you. I have the PN but no price is listed.

This is not a Mac speaker. You should be able to replace with any same size. My guess is just a wiring problem.

Problem is that the speaker that came with the Mac unit is a 9" reversed speaker. I look on the net and was not able to find one as I wanted to place a polypropylene speaker in lieu of the paper OEM one... Torrie, let us know what you come up with….

I had a similar sounding problem when I relocated my Mac subwoofer. After doing the install, it sounded terrible at first, like it was blown. Fortunately, my problem was simple and did not require a new speaker. It turns out the cone on my speaker was sticking a bit, and didn't move in and out freely as it would while playing music. I simply wiggled the cone in and out some to free it, reinstalled it, and haven't heard any sound problems since. I hope yours is the same issue. (credit for my fix goes to Shadowman who walked me through my install some time ago).
Good luck.

Let me share that as was mentioned by another I have walked several folks through the correcting of this issue even on OEM located subwoofers not to mention that I have corrected several within my facility.

To date I suspect that at least a dozen folks have had a severe clipping sound as soon as any bass is introduced to the speaker at which point it sounds as if the voice coil is shot however to date none have had to be replaced.

The problem in all cases so far is the design of the speaker and the fact that it is very easy for the face/grill to shift on the base and when this happens the results are what sounds like a dead speaker.

The other issue is that the speaker needs to be properly seated and all of the screws secured as this speaker needs to be fairly well sealed.

Let me know if I can help

All the best

Just to add my 2 cents.....

It's reasonably tough to blow a sub (I would admit to not being familiar with the Mac - but in a recording studio, for example, I am familiar). You would, with EQ flat, have to drive it to incredible levels to damage the coil.

As posted by Jax, it could be the voicecoil sticking - maybe the car's not been used a lot, maybe a tiny bit damp, all sorts of reasons. If you have access to the cone, very (VERY) gently with four fingers evenly spread, push in and out on the cone - if you hear a rasping/sticking sound, it's either sticking or blown (don't push on the center dome). If it moves freely and silently it's something else. It might just come unstuck as Jax's did.

yeah I know its hard to blow a woofer....but as someone who owns a recording studio and is a bassplayer I know from personal experience that it can be done.......and I've done it with 18" speakers!...I'm sure its something simple.........I'll check it out and let ya know.......thanks

The Mac sub is very unique in that it's a bass reflex design with the port through the center of the speaker cone. I never seen another driver of that design.

Pioneer makes a low profile 10" subwoofer 3" deep that should do the job. I is $99.87 from Parts Express. P/N 297-270. You would need a new box but that's only $10 worth of wood and stuff. (Carbon fiber cone for you carbon fiber folks too.) :lol
