Anyone recommend a certain garage alarm?

Well, pending an inspection, the car should be mine and on its way tomorrow. Which got me thinking, I need a garage alarm. I've done some searching, but wonder if anyone here recommends one brand or setup over the other. It would be cool to have a camera or something to check through the phone if the alarm goes off. Not a necessity though.

Thanks for the help!

If you have a burg system now, the garage can be added as a zone (s) Can be overall motion, point to point across the door, and contacts to the overhead, and pass doors. All can be wireless if a retrofit. One note, is the garage driven into, by other cars? Or will you be entering when system armed? Ifso you will need to have an entry delay, to be able to disarm upon entry, and a keypad to be able to get to it in a timely fashion. 60 seconds goes quick waiting for the door to go up, pull in, and get out of the car, to disarm. If a detached garage, can be a separate system, will need a phone line for monitoring ( can be shared with house)' or can be on it's own with a cellular monitoring.

Some security systems have a remote contol keyfob to arm/disarm security system which eliminates the panic of trying to disarm within 30-60 seconds. If you go with a camera system, get infared with it so you can "see in the dark." Handy for viewing on TV/Computer without having to turn on the interior garage lights. Distance you can see from the camera with IR is a lot shorter than white light though.

Bingo. Did this through ADT today. Camera system is viewable remotely as well so you can have a look at your GT if you get homesick while on a business trip.

There is other cars that will use this garage daily, so I wasn't sure how to set that up because the delay for the house alarm seemed too short to open, park, and get to the pad. It's good to hear brinks has a solution for this. I will contact them about an install tied to the house.

On a side note, a boot would probably just as effective :)

From above, I have never recommended the "fob" approach, there is no authentication, so if the fob is lost or stolen, they are in, especially as they now have the keys too.

For sure more delay can be added, but I would imagine the brinks options are what I described. You can extend the delay but if you too long, car is gone before detection.

My GT security solution is a little different. I have a 4 post Rotary lift in my garage and I disable it with a hidden switch when I'm away. My GT is stored 6 feet up in the air. There is no way to get the GT down to steal it or, if you have a teenager, take it for a drive. It also keeps our local field mice from getting into it.

I would be tempted to do the same, but I don't like the idea of the car up on the lift if an big earthquake hits. :ack

The best system one can think of is a good dog. German shepard or the belgian Malinois. They keep on making noise like hell till all neigbourhood is awake.

Yeah, I got a couple pit mixes from the shelter, they dont like strangers walking up to the house. Plenty of nights have been interrupted due to a loud car, raccoon, or person coming down the street. Sweet dogs when you meet them though, sleep on my chest everyday :wink

I bought mine after a home jacking. Three guys smached my windows, enterred the house, knocked me all over (3 holes in my skull) some ribs, pulled guns under my nose. They wanted money ( which I didn't have) and the keys of my Audi RS6. They knew I had such a car and these are not that common. Immediately after I had all windows treated with a special plastic wrap, improved alarm system and bought myself a trained defence dog (rather expensive but what the heck). I can sleep again and if anybody approaches my fence or comes in the neigbourhood I'm immediately alarmed. So are the neigbours :)

I didn't know Belgium was near Detroit. Are you and DBK neighbors?

Wow, thats crazy. Glad you are alright. I sleep with a little protection beside me, were you sleeping or was this during the day? Either way I'm sure its hard to react fast enough.

One of the best things I ever bought for my garage security is the Autocloser. Works fantastic. I did a little research before installing this one, and in my opinion it is the best.

Even in the 1906 earthquake many homes were still standing, although many may have major structural damage. This is when the building codes were much worse, but in IMO the workmanship much better. So on average I have a good chance that the 2nd floor will not collapse on top of the car. If it does I will have bigger problems to think about than the loss of the car. Having the car 6' in the air while the ground is moving is worrisome. The car's tire may partially come off of the ramps or worst!

I lot of home owners in the Bay Area falsely believe that the survival of their home during the Loma Preita earthquake proves it is sound and safe from a big 1906 type quake. That is far from being even close for those living near the Hayward or San Andreas faults. The loma Preita quake was nothing compared to a quake on a closer fault line.

1st 1906 type quake
2nd Hayward faults
3rd Loma Preita

"The car's tire may partially come off of the ramps or worst!" - 'ICE.

This can be eliminated by strapping the wheels/tires to the ramps. 'Not all that much extra time/work to do that once the car's already up in the air anyway. "An ounce of prevention", and all that... :wink :cheers

Would ratching tie downs with towels on the rims do the trick? If I felt better about leaving the FGT in up position I could get another car! :biggrin
